Instant Replay Review overturned 2B Umpire Jerry Layne's out call in the top of the 2nd inning of the Orioles-Red Sox game. With none out and one on, Orioles baserunner R1 J.J. Hardy attempted to steal second base on a swinging strikeout by batter Manny Machado, Red Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski to second baseman Dustin Pedroia as Hardy slid into second base and HP Umpire Mike DiMuro called Machado for backswing interference. Upon Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Orioles Manager Buck Showalter, Layne's ruling was reversed, the call was incorrect and DiMuro's interference call was enforced. At the time of the review, the game was tied, 0-0. The Orioles ultimately won the contest, 7-4.
