Instant Replay Review overturned 3B Umpire Jeff Kellogg's out (catch) call in the top of the 3rd and upheld 1B Umpire DJ Reyburn's safe call in the bottom of the 5th inning of the Red Sox-Mariners game. In the 3rd, with one out and one on, Red Sox batter Mike Napoli hit a 2-2 changeup from Mariners pitcher Erasmo Ramirez on a fly ball to left fielder Dustin Ackley, who dove for the ball as it neared the ground. Upon Replay Review as the result of a challenge by John Farrell, Kellogg's ruling was reversed, the call was incorrect. At the time of the review, the Mariners were leading, 3-0.
In the 5th, with none out and one on, Mariners batter James Jones hit a 2-0 fastball from Red Sox pitcher Jake Peavy on the ground to first baseman Mike Napoli, who threw to shortstop Stephen Drew to pitcher Peavy as Jones arrived at first base, Mariners baserunner R1 Endy Chavez out at second. Upon Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Red Sox Manager Farrell, Reyburn's ruling was affirmed, the call was correct. At the time of the review, the Mariners were leading, 3-2. The Mariners ultimately won the contest, 8-2.
