HP Umpire Paul Emmel ejected Royals Manager Ned Yost for arguing a balk call in the bottom of the 1st and Instant Replay Review overturned 2B Umpire Gabe Morales' out call in the top of the 4th inning of the Royals-White Sox game. In the 1st, with none out and one on, Royals pitcher James Shields attempted to pick off White Sox baserunner R3 Adam Eaton at third base and was called for a balk. Replays indicate Shields appeared to swing his free foot past the back edge of the rubber and failed to step directly towards third base before throwing to that base, the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Royals were leading, 2-1.
In the 4th, with none out and one on, Royals batter Alcides Escobar hit a 1-0 fastball from White Sox pitcher Andre Rienzo on the ground to shortstop Alexei Ramirez, who threw to first baseman Jose Abreu, Royals baserunner R2 Mike Moustakas to second base. Upon Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Royals Acting Manager Don Wakamatsu, Morales' ruling was reversed, the call was incorrect. At the time of the review, the Royals were leading, 5-1. The Royals ultimately won the contest, 6-3.
