Injury: Jim Wolf Takes Foul Ball to Mask, Marquez Debuts

HP Umpire Jim Wolf left Monday's Indians-Rangers game after suffering a foul ball to the face mask while Alfonso Marquez worked his first game of the 2014 Regular Season the same day.

With none out and two on in the bottom of the 6th inning, Rangers batter Daniel Robertson hit a 1-1 fastball from Indians pitcher John Axford directly back into home plate umpire Jim Wolf's protective face mask.

Wolf was replaced behind the plate by 2B Umpire Mark Ripperger while 1B Umpire Lance Barksdale and crew chief 3B Umpire Gary Cederstrom worked the bases in a three-man crew.

If a concussion is diagnosed or as a precaution, Wolf will be placed on MLB's 7-day Concussion List. In the interim, Angel Hernandez joined Cederstrom's crew as the second base umpire in New York (NL) Tuesday evening with Ripperger taking the third base position.

Hernandez served as 3B Umpire during Sunday's Athletics-Orioles game that featured two Replay Reviews and two ejections: A's pitcher Fernando Abad and Orioles third baseman Manny Machado.

After a day off Sunday, Marquez appeared Monday afternoon in San Francisco with Gerry Davis' crew, manning first base as the Nationals defeated the Giants, 9-2.
