Instant Replay Review upheld 1B Umpire Mark Carlson's out call in the bottom of the 3rd inning of the Cubs-Cardinals game. With none out and none on, Cardinals batter Matt Holliday hit a 0-1 slider from Cubs pitcher Jason Hammel on the ground to shortstop Starlin Castro, who threw to first baseman Anthony Rizzo as Holliday arrived at first base. Upon Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Cardinals Manager Mike Matheny, Carlson's ruling was affirmed, the call was correct. At the time of the review, the Cardinals were leading, 4-0.
