2B Umpire Ted Barrett ejected Rangers Manager Ron Washington for arguing a Replay Review decision in which Instant Replay Review overturned HP Umpire Paul Schrieber's out call in the top of the 6th inning of the Mariners-Rangers game. With one out and three on, Mariners batter Brad Miller hit a 0-0 sinker from Rangers pitcher Pedro Figueroa on the ground back to Figueroa, who threw to catcher J.P. Arencibia as Mariners baserunner R3 Dustin Ackley slid into home plate. Upon Instant Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Mariners Manager Lloyd McClendon, Schrieber's ruling that Arencibia legally caught and possessed the ball and tagged home plate was reversed, the call was incorrect. Pursuant to UEFL Rule 6-2-b-7, the Quality of Correctness component for Barrett's ejection of Washington, which occurred after the announced Replay Review decision of overturn (safe), is "correct," as the call after challenge/review (safe) was correct. At the time of the review, the Mariners were leading, 5-0. At the time of the ejection, the Mariners were leading, 6-0. The Mariners ultimately won the contest, 7-1.

Did someone forget to tell the managers that the umpires on the field aren't the ones looking at the replays?
ReplyDeleteBut the "neighborhood play" at second base can't be reviewed. This is dumb.
ReplyDeleteThis was certainly an interesting one. I think people would have a difficult time criticizing the umpire regardless of how he called this one.
ReplyDeleteThe league is going to start to come down hard on these guys that are getting run after the replay. Essentially, they are saying "screw you commissioners office."
ReplyDeleteTwo words: Buyer's Regret.
ReplyDeleteThis interpretation is already in talks about being changed..... It's one of the biggest mistakes in rule interpretation history and they know it. Egos will have to be left at the door.
ReplyDeleteMistakes are being made and trust has been broken ... That's the issue .
ReplyDeleteThis new rule interpretation is absolutely terrible on MLB's part. The catcher pulled the ball out of his glove with his bare hand, then the ball came loose after it was entirely in his bare hand when he was trying to throw. They just pulled this interpretation out of thin air with no rhyme or reason. This is an out every day.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of egos, I wonder if we'll see a scapegoat. Also, when LaRussa was talking with MLB network yesterday about the new transfer interpretation, he sure sounded cocksure with himself. I would have no problems seeing Tony LaRussa getting ejected for being on the wrong end of this sort of call if he were still managing.
ReplyDeleteYou guys didn't count his ejection later in the game too?!?! ;) "Balkin Bob" had to get rid of a fan in Miller Park again last night..
ReplyDeleteFor those who are curious here is the "Playing Rules Committee" Sandy Alderson, Chair Sam Bernabe Rod Carew Brian Gorman John McHale, Jr. Terry Ryan John SchuerholzBill Stoneman Joe Torre
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know the Replay CC in Chelsea this week?
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure I know why they did it: Because you can't see inside the glove with replay and they felt they needed some visible criteria to use for reviews. That doesn't excuse a new rule interpretation that is actually ignoring the rule itself or the fact that they bizarrely chose to make the so-called "neighborhood play" non-reviewable.
ReplyDeleteWasn't this "ejection" the removal of a complete dumbo that shined a laser pointer right in a batter's eye?
ReplyDeleteClassic Bob Davidson smirk. Great still photo.
ReplyDeleteRules committee has nothing to do with this. Voluntary release interpretation is the fielder has to get the ball in his hand. Video shows that the catcher did not do this.
ReplyDeleteBrian Gorman is one of the best MLB umpires.
ReplyDeleteYes. I just think it's funny... I read last night that the last two times "Balkin Bob" has been behind the plate in Milwaukee for a Cardinals-Brewers game he has had a fan removed.
ReplyDeleteThat green laser on Holiday's face is extremely dangerous! I'm glad they got it handled.
