Instant Replay Review overturned 1B Umpire Hunter Wendelstedt's no catch (trap) call in the top of the 7th inning of the Rangers-Rays game. With two out and one on, Rangers batter J.P. Arencibia hit a 1-0 fastball from Rays pitcher Josh Lueke in the air to right fielder Wil Myers, who slid for the ball with an outstretched glove as it fell towards the ground. Upon Instant Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Rays Manager Joe Maddon, Wendelstedt's ruling that Myers did not catch the ball before it touched the ground was reversed, the call was incorrect. At the time of the review, the Rays were leading, 8-0. The Rays ultimately won the contest, 8-1.

Wow, 30 replays in just the first week and it's not done yet. Wonder if they'll top 1000 for the season.
ReplyDeletefor this type of call (and a few others we've seen), i feel like the crew could have conferred with each other to get it right. that takes 30-45 seconds, compared to the amount of time the video replay takes. the umpires on their own should be doing that still, like they would have in the past.
ReplyDeleteKiss the ejections good bye, good for baseball that they get the calls right. No more entertainment. http://m.mlb.com/video/v5975865/ariwsh-hinch-is-ejected-arguing-a-play-at-first/?query=&game_pk=245820 I guess ejections would only occur when either players and or managers argue balls and strikes? Not reviewable?
ReplyDeleteThis is not related to this call, but we almost had our first ejection Today as Mike Matheny argued with Brian Gorman for awhile over this call. There is no video of the actual play but they show it at about the 10:25 mark of this video. What do you guys think of this no call by Gorman?
