MLB Replay Reviews 130-132: T Gibson, CB Bucknor (2-3, 3)

Instant Replay Review upheld 1B Umpire Tripp Gibson's safe call in the bottom of the 4th, fair ball call in the top of the 7th and overturned HP Umpire CB Bucknor's out call in the top of the 7th inning of the White Sox-Tigers game. In the 4th, with one out and none on, Tigers batter Nick Castellanos hit a 1-1 cutter from White Sox pitcher John Danks on the ground to shortstop Alexei Ramirez, who threw to first baseman Jose Abreu as Castellanos arrived at first base. Upon Instant Replay Review as the result of a challenge by White Sox Manager Robin Ventura, Gibson's ruling that Abreu did not catch the ball and tag first base prior to Castellanos' touch arrival was affirmed, the call was correct. At the time of the review, the Tigers were leading, 1-0.

In the 7th, with none out and one on, White Sox batter Abreu hit a 3-2 fastball from Tigers pitcher Anibal Sanchez on a fly ball to right field near the foul line. Upon Instant Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Tigers Manager Brad Ausmus, Gibson's ruling that the ball landed in fair territory before bounding into the seats was affirmed, the call was correct. At the time of the review, the White Sox were leading, 2-1.

Later in the inning, with one out and one on, White Sox batter Ramirez hit a 0-1 changeup from Tigers pitcher Sanchez on the ground to left fielder Rajai Davis, who threw to catcher Alex Avila as White Sox baserunner R2 Dayan Viciedo arrived at home plate. Upon Instant Replay Review as the result of a request by White Sox Manager Ventura and initiation by Crew Chief Dan Iassogna, Bucknor's ruling that Avila legally tagged Viciedo prior to his touch arrival at home plate was reversed, the call was incorrect. At the time of the review, the White Sox were leading, 2-1. The White Sox ultimately won the contest, 3-1.

  1. I would like to challenge this ruling based on the fact that not only do my eyes tell me that pitch was a strike but the rockies in game ford strikezone box said that pitch was a strike.

  2. Are you seriously challenging the PitchFX data? Something so utterly useless and time-wasting that it is now unchallengeable per UEFL Rule 6-1-a?

  3. In re E-015 Tumpane 1;

    This appeal has been summarily denied by the UEFL Appellate Interpreter.

    UEFL Rule 6-1-a specifies that a challenge may only be initiated when two criteria are met: " To initiate a challenge, a UEFL member must (1) be logged in and [(2)] cannot challenge Pitch f/x (location-based) ball/strike calls, as in Rule 6-2-b-1|2." The Appellate Interpreter finds this challenge concerns Pitch f/x (location-based ball/strike calls, as in Rule 6-2-b-1|2, and, therefore, this appeal does not satisfy required condition #2.

    Commissioner's Note: I have received and reviewed video of this at-bat and ejection from SF's CSN/NBC Bay Area and COL's Root Sports. The 1-1 pitch, ruled strike two, was located off the plate per PFX (px -.943 / MOE px max |.935|). This, combined with the K3 pitch, seals the ejection's QOC.

    Certiorari denied.
