Instant Replay Review overturned 1B Umpire Jerry Layne's safe call in the bottom of the 3rd inning of the Cubs-Cardinals game. With two out and one on, Cardinals batter John Jay hit a 1-1 fastball from Cubs pitcher Carlos Villanueva on the ground to shortstop Starlin Castro, who threw to first baseman Anthony Rizzo as Jay arrived at first base. Upon Instant Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Cubs Manager Rick Renteria, Layne's ruling that Rizzo did not catch the ball and tag first base prior to Jay's touch arrival was reversed, the call was incorrect. At the time of the review, the Cardinals were leading, 4-1. The Cardinals ultimately won the contest, 10-4.
