MLB Instant Replay Review 021: Mark Ripperger (01)

Instant Replay Review confirmed 1B Umpire Mark Ripperger's safe (in play) call in the top of the 7th inning of the Cardinals-Reds game. With none out and two on, Cardinals batter Matt Holliday hit a 2-1 cutter from Reds pitcher Trevor Bell to the upper right field wall, off center fielder Billy Hamilton the carom caught by right fielder Jay Bruce. Upon Instant Replay Review as the result of an inquiry by Reds Manager Bryan Price and initiation by Crew Chief Gary Cederstrom (home run boundary call), Ripperger's ruling that the ball hit the top of the wall prior to Hamilton's glove, remaining in play was affirmed, the call was correct. Because Ripperger's initial call of safe was proper, the issue of runner placement does not exist for this play. At the time of the review, the Cardinals were leading, 4-3. The Cardinals ultimately won the contest, 7-6.
