MLB Replay Reviews 107|109: Little, Carlson (1, 2)

Instant Replay Review upheld 3B Umpire Will Little's fair ball in outfield call in the top of the 1st and overturned 1B Umpire Mark Carlson's out call in the bottom of the 8th inning of the Orioles-Red Sox game. In the 1st, with none out and none on, to lead off the game, Orioles batter Nick Markakis hit a 0-0 fastball from Red Sox pitcher John Lackey on a line drive toward the left field line and into the corner for a double. Upon Instant Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Red Sox Manager John Farrell, Little's ruling that the ball landed and first touched the ground in fair territory was upheld, the call was correct. At the time of the review, the contest was tied, 0-0.

In the 8th, with none out and none on, Red Sox batter Brock Holt hit a 1-2 breaking ball from pitcher Brian Matusz on the ground to second baseman Steve Lombardozzi who threw to first baseman Chris Davis as Holt arrived at first base. Upon Instant Replay Review as the result of a request by Red Sox Manager Farrell and initiation by Crew Chief Ted Barrett, Carlson's ruling that Davis caught the ball and tagged first base prior to Holt's touch arrival was reversed, the call was incorrect. At the time of the review, the Orioles were leading, 7-4. The Orioles ultimately won the contest, 8-4.
