For instance, Chris Conroy will be begin his season with acting crew chief Jerry Meals in Crew J. When Gary Darling returns to Crew Chief service mid-season, Conroy will return to Gary Cederstrom's Crew I (for AAA Rover) and Meals will slide to Crew J's Umpire 2 position.
The annual MLB Umpire Crew list always solicits excitement and signifies yet another step on the March trek to Opening Day and April baseball. The UEFL has compiled the following notable features of this list:
New Chiefs' Crews:
» Jeff Nelson (Crew A) and Bill Miller (Crew B).
Acting Crew Chiefs:
» Larry Vanover (Crew F, for Tim McClelland) and Jerry Meals (Crew J, for Gary Darling).
Crews with AAA or MiLB Fill-In/Call-Up Umpires scheduled to begin the season:

7 umps starting the year on the DL, but only 6 rovers. Is Gibson's temporary 2nd slot the 7th?
ReplyDeleteI'm sure this isn't allowed by the collective bargaining agreement, but rather than calling up 7 umpires, they really ought to use DLed umpires in the replay center in New York where possible. You'd have to assume that most of these injured/ill guys would be well enough to do that.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Gibson will start with B then when Everitt or Fairchild returns will go to c before going back to his regular crew.
ReplyDeleteI know "DL" signifies "Disabled List". What does "BL" stand for?
ReplyDeleteWhy is Vanover an acting crew chief on crew F when Hernandez is on that crew and was often an acting crew chief the past few seasons?
ReplyDeleteGreg Gibson better be getting double pay.
ReplyDeleteSeniority?
ReplyDeleteHow are acting CC's handled in terms of UEFL point calculations?
ReplyDeleteI saw Mike Everitt do a spring training game behind a plate though...
ReplyDeleteMLB was always going to be 2 umpires short this year when they only hired 7 umpires for 9 vacant positions. I wonder if that is why Quinn Wolcott and Will Little aren't officially hired, but penciled in instead of AAA Rover.
ReplyDeleteI do not understand how Greg Gibson can be in 2 different crews at the same time.
ReplyDeleteIs there any way to find out if there was perhaps technical difficulties? The way Demuth doesn't really give a signal one way or the other made me wonder if maybe he was simply saying that the guy in the truck couldn't get the feed. Just my observation.
ReplyDeleteGreg Gibson will begin the year with Crew B. Whenever Everett or Fairchild returns to that crew, Gibson will go to Crew C. Whenever Marquez returns he will return to his regular crew
ReplyDeleteI guess McClelland is not expected back this year, given that his crew, and only his crew, of crews with DLed umpires has 4 regular MLB umpires on it with no designation of a crew to which they'd return?
ReplyDeleteWith Wolcott and Little as definites for now, I would guess the other AAA call ups to start the year would be T. Gibson, Tumpane, Hamari, Fagan, Campos, Ripperger, and Basner because they have MLB experience, as of last season. Would not be surprised if Barber, Hoberg, and Gosney get a look early, especially with Instant Replay experience, as they worked the Arizona Fall League installation trial run with T. Gibson.
ReplyDeleteIF ITS NOT BROKE, DONT FIX IT: glad to see the Scott, Iassgona, Bucknor team back together for another campaign.
ReplyDeleteI always find this and Jeff Kellogg's crews to be the strongest when they come to town
Gibson will be with crew C to begin the season. Crew C then goes on vacation and Gibson will move over to join Crew B in week two of the season. Not sure how long he stays there.
ReplyDeleteIf Fairchild is going to be back soon wouldn't it have made more sense to have Mark Carlson be the #2 on Bill Miller's crew so that he can have 3 guys he is with all season unless it was going to be that someone like Larry Vanover or Angel Hernandez was going to be on that crew until McClelland was out for the year (with Jerry Meals temporarily replacing Gary Darling it looks like they just moved him from #2 to CC and Emmel from #3 to #2 and put Chris Conroy as the temporary #3)
ReplyDeletethey both joined in 1993 and Angel has had more post-season assignments and Vanover was off for some time due to the 1999 mass resignations before he was re-hired.
ReplyDeleteThat's not how the process works. My understanding is that the crews chiefs, from senior to junior, get to pick their number 2 umpires. So Miller would've had one of the last two picks and gotten what was left over.
ReplyDeleteWhat's up with Tim? Injury? I know he was considering retiring a year ago.
ReplyDeleteHmm. Mark Carlson & Laz Diaz were the two non crew chief umpires in Australia and they're on crew A.
ReplyDeleteFor the opener tonight in San Diego Gameday says the crew is: HP Culbreth, 1B Reynolds, 2B Knight, 3B Gonzalez.......
ReplyDeleteSo far, based upon this posting and GameDay:
ReplyDeleteC: Marquez confirmed as #2
D: Confirmed
G: Confirmed
H: Randazzo confirmed as #2
I rover: Ripperger
J: Confirmed
L rover: Barber
P rover: Gibson
R: Fagan for Dreckman
S rover: Tumpane
A, B, E, F, K, M, N, O, and Q still as yet unassigned. With 2 extra crews, will there end up being 2 or 4 crews on "vacation" per week?
O: Confirmed.
ReplyDeleteBelieve E & F arereplay crews this week
ReplyDeleteLooks like Tim McCelland is out for the season. http://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/sports/baseball/2014/04/02/tim-mcclelland-back-injury-sidelined-for-2014-baseball-season/7214799/
ReplyDeleteThanks for the update on Tim.
