MLB Instant Replay Reviews S-47|48: Scheurwater (S-1|2)

Instant replay affirmed 1B Umpire Stu Scheurwater's safe call in the bottom of the 4th inning and out call in bottom of the 8th inning of the Pirates-Mariners game. In the 4th, with none out and one on, Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal attempted to pick off Mariners baserunner R1 Leury Bonilla immediately following the 1-0 pitch from Padres pitcher Ian Kennedy to Mariners batter Kyle Seager, a called ball. Upon instant replay review as the result of a challenge by Padres Manager Bud Black, Scheurwater's ruling that Padres first baseman Yonder Alonso did not tag Bonilla prior to Bonilla's right foot touching first base was affirmed, the call was correct. At the time of the review, the Padres were leading, 3-1.

In the 8th, with two out and three on, Mariners batter Austin Wilson hit a 3-1 fastball from Padres pitcher Tim Stauffer to third baseman Alberto Gonzalez, who threw to first baseman Kyle Blanks as Wilson arrived at first base. Upon instant replay review as the result of a challenge by Mariners Manager Lloyd McClendon, Scheurwater's ruling that Blanks caught the ball and legally tagged first base prior to Wilson's touch arrival was affirmed, the call was correct. At the time of the review, the Padres were leading, 7-2. The Padres ultimately won the contest, 7-2.
