Instant replay affirmed 2B Umpire Brian O'Nora's out call in the top of the 7th inning of the Pirates-Red Sox game. With one out and one on, Pirates batter Jaff Decker hit a 1-2 pitch from Red Sox pitcher Burke Badenhop back to Badenhop, who threw to shortstop Xander Bogaerts to third baseman Will Middlebrooks trying to retire Pirates baserunner R2 Michael Martinez attempting to advance to third base and batter-runner B1 Decker attempting to advance to second base on the throw. Upon instant replay review as the result of a challenge by Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle, O'Nora's ruling that Middlebrooks successfully tagged Decker while off of his base was affirmed, the call was correct. At the time of the review, the contest was tied, 2-2. The Pirates ultimately won the contest, 4-2.
Administrative Note: MLBAM is using new striker programming for Gameday. The new text clearly reflects the impetus or reason for consulting instant replay review and is of the form "Pirates challenge (tag play) denied, play stands as called." The previous syntax was simply "play reviewed and stands as called" or "play reviewed and overturned."
