MLB Instant Replay Review S-06: Tripp Gibson (S-2)

Tripp Gibson out call upheld after instant replay review
Instant replay confirmed 1B Umpire Tripp Gibson's out call in the bottom of the 1st inning of the Dodgers-Angels game. With one out and none on, Angels batter Mike Trout hit a fly ball off Dodgers pitcher Dan Haren to center fielder Yasiel Puig, who threw to shortstop Hanley Ramirez to catcher A.J. Ellis for an originally ruled out (triple and caught attempting an inside-the-park home run). Upon instant replay review as the result of an argument by Angels Manger Mike Scioscia and initiation by crew chief Gerry Davis, Gibson's ruling that Ellis tagged Trout prior to Trout's arrival and that Ellis did not violate Rule 7.13 by blocking home plate without possession of the ball was upheld, the call was correct. At the time of the instant replay review, the contest was tied, 0-0. The contest ultimately ended in a tie, 4-4, in 10 innings.

The tag on the play was not in question....socia questioned the new rule on blocking the plate and it was actually a crew chief initiated review.

What a tough call Great look and even though I thought his hand was in.. it's becoming more and more apparent the umpires are NOT going to overturn anything unless it's very obvious. The umpires are 6-6 in confirming calls, but the 1st two should have been overturned. So, this could be a very interesting season.

Mechanically I really liked Gibson's out call. The gather and then the solid whacker. It looks really solid. I'm not all rah rah on these umpire getting all these calls right, but I do know this.... This was a cluster**** and it's only going to get more bizarre once we add stadium replays into the mix.
Stadiums CAN show replays and that adds a whole different element into the mix. I think managers will begin to delay asking for appeals. Essentially what baseball is doing is asking the umpire to replay EVERY close call after the 7th inning. That is GROSS.

It was nearly three minutes from the play in real time to the signal after the replay review. These have not been quick decisions.

I don't believe scioscia challenged the play and should not be considered 0/2 in his challenge record. The review was initiated by the umpires and therefore should not count against him. I doubt this will be changed as it will not fulfill the agenda of this website, which is to make umpires look good and coaches and players look bad - hopefully I am wrong.

Did you even bother to read the description of the play here? "...Upon instant replay review as the result of an argument by Angels Manger Mike Scioscia and initiation by crew chief Gerry Davis..."

Great tag by AJ Ellis to both concede access to home plate AND get the speedy Mike Trout on the side. Tough call to go against the Angels, but 100% the correct call. Good positioning by Gibby.
