The Spring Training roster below also includes sleeve numbers for all applicable umpires, including the new Minor League call-up umpires authorized to fill in at the Major League level during the regular season. "--" indicates umpire is a Minor League (AAA) official and has not been placed on the MLB regular season fill-in list.

- Angel Campos remains on the MiLB call-up and MLB Spring Training lists.
- Todd Tichenor has vacated #97 (Ben May) and assumed #13, Derryl Cousins' old number.
- Chad Fairchild has vacated #75 (Tom Woodring) and assumed #4, Tim Tschida's old number.
- [*] Jim Wolf does not appear on the Spring Training Umpires list as captured 2/22/14.
Jon Byrne is the first Aussie to be assigned an MLB number. Well done!
ReplyDeleteJim Wolf 28 is missing
ReplyDeleteWolf's name was not included in the list of umpires we received.
ReplyDeleteAngel Campos is still a pro umpire? That's a bit of a shock since he didn't work a single MLB game last season, wasn't in AAA after his June concussion/injury and wasn't one of the seven hired full time this year. Surprising to see MLB keep Campos around for another go at it.
ReplyDeleteNo retirements eh? Unless it's Wolf of course but I thought we might have a crew chief or two leave. I think Hirschbeck & McClelland will call it quits after this year. Cowboy Joe probably will want to stick around, especially if the CBA negotiations go well while he is president of the umpires union
ReplyDeleteI went thru the 2013 roster, Scott Barry 87 is also missing from your 2014 roster.
ReplyDeleteI'm confused about something: they hired 7 umpires and are adding 2 crews. Does this mean that we're going to see 2 fill ins up all year? Seems like a recipe for mistakes once guys start getting hurt and going on vacation. You're going to have a ton of guys who have never worked MLB games or have minimal experience. Those are the guys who tend to forget that people don't come to the park to see them. I also count 72 on that list. That means someone other than Wolf is missing and that the absences are likely omissions or guys starting the year on the DL?
ReplyDeleteOdd that mlb would leave off wolf and Barry. Then again this is a "spring training" list so maybe those two are just not part of the march festivities
ReplyDeleteYes, the 7 umpires hired include an expansion of 6 + Wally Bell's replacement. The remaining two positions for the two added crews will be season-long fill-in umpires, similar to Todd Tichenor's role the year before he was hired full-time.
ReplyDeleteMy source has added Barry to the list, but Wolf is still off.
ReplyDeleteDo we have any idea who those 2 slots go to? I assume not making them full time members of the staff was simply a cost cutting measure?
ReplyDeleteNot yet known. Tichenor's wasn't actually released to him, when the regular season roster came out that year, it just said "AAA Fill-In"
ReplyDeleteMLB still has 2012 crews posted, and a June 2013 roster with out-of-date information. Rhetorical question: Do their umpiring and/or Web departments still exist?
ReplyDeleteCampos moved from PCL to IL.
ReplyDeletePR has access to MLB Press Box. MLB Press Box released umpire names a brief time ago. The information presented here coordinates with the provided list. Wolf's not listed on there. There are nine umpires with the name 'W' -- and not one with the last name Wolf. We'll just have to wait and see until the 2014 media guide comes out.
ReplyDeleteAngel Campos is working the plate today in the game between Detroit and Atlanta.
ReplyDeleteI heard that McClelland would miss the whole season due to injury, as well as Marquez and Darling missing a few months also. Is that true?
ReplyDeleteAdd Fairchild to that list too. Out until May......
ReplyDeletePer mlb
ReplyDeleteJim Wolf is working spring training in AZ
Vic Carapazza change his number to 19
Umpires 36,37 ,72 and 4 will not be starting the season.
ReplyDeleteReplacement crew chiefs are Larry Vanover 27 and Jerry Meals 41
So that means that we're starting with 13 rookies or fill-ins before anyone goes on vacation? It's a good thing that they're adding replay, because otherwise bad calls and ejections would be way up. Surprised that Sam Halbrook isn't one of the replacement CCs.
ReplyDeleteI find it hard to believe that anyone could be out for an injury all year (vs. illness) unless he got hurt in the last month or two. If a guy like McClelland needed surgery or something, he's been off since Oct 1, and very few injuries are 12 month recoveries for players, let alone umpires. Even an achilles rupture is more like 8 months.
ReplyDeleteJim Wolf worked 2B for ARZ/CHI today.
