As the 2013 MLB Wild Card games get underway, we again open the umpire forum to discussion. Notes include home plate umpire performance according to pitch f/x and UEFL Rules 6-2-b-a (horizontal bound, "Kulpa Rule") and 6-2-b-b (vertical strike zone, "Miller Rule"). Plays include significant plays, if such plays occur. For future games, notes include home plate umpire probables.

Plays (QOC Coloring: Green [Correct], Yellow [Irrecusable or Inconclusive] or Red [Incorrect])
CIN@PIT: 1B Umpire Dale Scott rules McCutchen safe at first on the Reds' double play attempt
CIN@PIT: LF Umpire Tim Timmons struck by bounding batted ball, fair ruled by both Tim & 3B Rob Drake
CIN@PIT: HP Umpire Joe West upholds RF Umpire Lance Barksdale's home run (no interference) call
TB@CLE: HP Umpire Gerry Davis consults with crew, properly overturns 3B Umpire Gibson's foul call

TB@CLE: 1B Umpire Barrett calls Brantley safe at first on grounder up the middle
The first improper umpire mechanics were on display on the foul ball that hit Tim Timmons on the left field line. U3 Rob Drake was already signalling "fair" on a ball that was behind him. That's Timmons' call -- and he made it, too. Good thing they both signalled fair!
ReplyDeleteWill Close Call Sports be doing a write up of Henderson Alvarez's no-hitter?
ReplyDeleteYou missed Kulpa nearly falling over the runner as he slid into third and bounded home last night.
ReplyDeleteFrom the GIF that was posted, it looked like Timmons was going to call it foul.
ReplyDeleteNo, he was throwing his arms up in the air to get out of the way. It wasn't even touching the line and it was in front of him. Why would he call it foul?
ReplyDeleteBrain fart? I'm just saying it "looked" like he was going to call it foul. From the motions he used to get away from it, he came very close to raising both his hands above his head.
ReplyDeleteIt looks to me like he Drake turned and saw that TImmons was trying to get out of the way, meaning he probably doesn't have a good look at the call since he's moving, and made the call instead since he's set.
ReplyDeleteTB@CLE: Barrett's call of Brantley being safe was correct, not inconclusive. Great call.
ReplyDeleteI agree. No way was Brantley out. The view from 2nd base is conclusive,
ReplyDeleteBarrett got it right at first.
ReplyDeleteGerry Davis had a great night behind the plate. I really like that he's not afraid to get the high strike.
