MLB Ejection 153: Joe West (3; Joba Chamberlain)

1B Umpire Joe West ejected Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain for arguing a check swing (ball) call in the top of the 10th inning of the Red Sox-Yankees game. With one out and one on, Red Sox batter Shane Victorino attempted to check his swing on a 1-2 slider from Chamberlain. Replays indicate Victorino did not appear to attempt to strike the pitch, the call was correct. After review by the UEFL Appeals Board, the call is now incorrect. At the time of the ejection, the Red Sox were leading, 9-8. The Red Sox ultimately won the contest, 9-8.

This is Joe West (22)'s third ejection of 2013.
Joe West now has 2 points in the UEFL (4 Previous + 2 MLB + -4 Incorrect Call = 2).
Crew Chief Joe West now has 3 points in the UEFL's Crew Division (3 + 0 Incorrect Call = 3).

This is the 153rd ejection of the 2013 MLB season.
This is the 67th player ejection of 2013. Prior to ejection, Chamberlain's line was 0.2 IP, 2 H, ER (L).
This is the Yankees' 4th ejection of 2013, 5th in the AL East (TOR 12; BOS 8; TB 6; BAL 5; NYY 4).
This is Joba Chamberlain's 1st ejection of 2013 and first since August 30, 2007 (Angel Hernandez; QOC = U).
This is Joe West's first ejection since June 1, 2013 (Dale Sveum; QOC = Incorrect [Crewmate]).

I challenge. That's an attempt to strike the baseball.

I agree with you, though it appears the call should be irrecusable since the ejection occurred after the play during a pitching change

I'll reserve judgment for a potential challenge, but: Rob Drake, come on. Stroll to the box; take a ball; step out; call time; foul a pitch off; step out; take a ball; step out; call time; foul ball; step out; foul ball ... And you wonder why these games take at least four hours to complete.

That is definitely a swing - I could see how West could miss it, but the overhead replay is a no brainier....I doubt it will be overturned though.

This is one of those that Gil (assuming it was Gil) should have deferred to the appeals board like Ejection 149. Hell, this one is much closer than 149 was.

Hell that was a check swing morons

Lindsay said...

That's a vast improvement for you....you only need to delete on word and you have a correct sentence!

Yet ho about you don't judge someone without knowing tem. I am sick and tired f being attack by immature adults

Fletcher missed a call at third during the Yankee's six-run seventh. It would have been a rally killer and the first out of the inning. So don't think this crew let the Sox win. Plus Victorino is having trouble hitting sliders, hitting only from the right side, and Joba decides to go to a fastball in that situation? Not smart.

Nice to know Bill know one ask you that, You people really need to learn better respect for people.

Lindsay said...

I believe you began the dialogue by calling people 'MORONS' ...and it was a swing BTW

Lindsay said...

You got a point Scott but if you go back there have target me over other issues. when i never called anyone names. Yet they attack me on my spelling and grammar and knowledge of rules

Lindsay said...

No need for obscenities. No need to call me a moron. I umpired professional baseball. That's a swing. To quote one Jim Calhoun: "Get some facts and come back and see me."

Oh look, people arguing between each other again.

All these damn personal attacks of various posters in every other thread are getting very old very fast. The comments must be monitored better IMO. Joe West is a great Umpire but I believe he missed the check swing call. It doesn't make him a terrible Umpire, he's human. Humans err in judgement sometimes. The reason people had to make accounts in the first place is because of continued personal attacks. It has not gotten any better this year and it is a shame because this is a really good website with many good posters.

You people have attack me over and over and over and over without me calling you anything. Now your upset cause i cal you a moron? get over it. You attack me on my knowledge and why i umpire softball

Lindsay said...

Big man on campus not awarding someone a base. Watch out guys I think he might give me the hook in a minute

Lindsay said...

See your just keep doing it again. you assumed I only did slow pitch softball and never umpire a boys game before. I just showed you I know the rules of baseball and softball many people whom don't have that.
Softball is more difficult to judge with judgment calls as there "closer" plays cause its a 60 feet. there minor difference in babe ruth baseball/softball.
1. pitchers distance
2. bases distances
3. runner leaves early they are called out.
4. some minor things
5. no balk in this it be a "ball in softball"

I don't think Joe West is a very good umpire. But I don't have a major issue with the call. What I have a problem with is his body gestures after an ejection. He just dismisses a player or coach with a wave of his hand. If a player gestured that toward an umpire, I can guarantee he'd be ejected and probably fined additionally for it.

Gil, this needs to come to an end.

Lindsay said...

Is the challenge on this call going to be heard or what?

Lindsay said...

This ruling has been challenged and is under review by the UEFL Appeals Board.

Lindsay said...

Look what i said i am going by how it was rule in the game not what everyone wants to think. What everyone is saying its a strike i agree but the fact of the matter umpire didn't see that therefore the strike does not exist.

In re: 153 West 3;

After review, the Original Ruling has been reversed in a 3-0-1 decision by the UEFL Appeals Board. Three Appeals Board members voted to overturn the Original Ruling while one elected to defer it.

Majority Opinion, Turducken:
Foremost, he offered. Second, I do not think that the window had closed. Overturn.

Dissenting Opinion, BT_Blue:
Since there was indeed a full at bat between the call in question and the ejection, I am voting to defer and that the ejection is irrecusable.

Therefore, the Board reverses the Original Ruling.

Confirm: -
Uphold: -
Overturn: tmac, RichMSN, Turducken
Defer: BT_Blue
Abstain: Gil (Posted Original Ruling), Jeremy (deployment), yawetag (owns West)

I stand corrected - well done!

While I would typically agree with you that an umpire shouldn't have that kind of body language, If a player is going to yell stuff at me from the dugout, then that's the kind of respect he get. You get what you give.
