You can see Barrett ready to issue the equipment violation for the bat toss if Reyes doesn't pick it up, but as soon as Reyes throws the helmet and especially behind him anywhere near where the umpire is standing, that equip fine just turned into an ejection.
ReplyDeleteUmpires need to learn they aren't the stars of the game that people pay money to see.
ReplyDeletePlayers need to learn that people don't pay to see them act like immature children when they don't get their way, thereby having themselves removed from the very game that people pay to see them 'professionally' play.

ReplyDeleteLooks like an easy call here! Toss the helmet back to the dugout and it is what it is. But throwing it in the direction of the umpire is an easy ejection..

ReplyDeleteYou're right. The players are there to play baseball, which doesn't include throwing helmets around calls. The umpires are there to enforce the rules, which coincidentally do not permit throwing helmets around to argue calls. So I'm not really seeing the relevance of your comment here.

ReplyDeleteWell, his helmet did actually end up landing right next to his bat.. Not saying it was right, but it's not like it was thrown completely out of the way either..
ReplyDeleteYou guys have this all wrong. Barrett threw him out because the helmet landed right at the feet of the bat boy. Reyes was showing up the bat boy. Instant hook.
ReplyDeleteObviously, an umpire who hasn't ejected anyone in two years and has tossed all of ten people since 2006 must be an attention-grubbing megalomaniac.
ReplyDeleteIt seems virtually all announcers these days are shameless homers. "Barrett had an opportunity to let Reyes walk out to SS..." Are you kidding? Reyes had the opportunity to not mouth off, throw his helmet toward the umpire, and generally act like an entitled temperamental child.

ReplyDeleteWatching the entirety live, the umps got this wrong, I think, according to mlb.com Marquez tossed him and someone else, but saw Barry eject someone. Weird play, this is worth a challenge Next year.

This is a textbook case for all the problems with replay. It's too bad Kawasaki didnt step on 2nd then tag the runner, that would of been 2 outs (but he probably thought it was a catch too)
I lived a hour away from Cece but never had the chance to visit him. Wish I had. I called him once trying to get a price on his CP. Problem was, I was calling from Sydney, Australia at the time.
