Crew Chief Bill Miller now has 1 point in the UEFL's Crew Division (0 Previous + 1 Correct Call = 1).

*Rule 6.02(b) Comment states, in part: "Umpires will not call “Time” at the request of the batter or any member of his team once the pitcher has started his windup or has come to a set position even though the batter claims “dust in his eyes,” “steamed glasses,” “didn’t get the sign” or for any other cause."
This is the 97th ejection of the 2013 MLB season.
This is the 43rd player ejection of 2013. Prior to his ejection, Gomes was 1-4 in the contest.
This is the Red Sox's 3rd ejection of 2013, T-3rd in the AL East (TOR 8; BAL, BOS, TB 4; NYY 1).

This is Todd Tichenor's first ejection since June 1, 2013 (Lance Berkman; QOC = N).
Wrap: Boston Red Sox vs. Oakland Athletics, 7/14/13
Video: Gomes requests "time" too late and is not granted his request, tossed arguing the no-call (BOS)
I wonder what Gomes is arguing. Can someone read lips? It seems pretty obvious he waited for Balfour to start his windup before calling time, and I'm pretty sure Tichenor told him he can't get time granted when the pitcher is in his windup, so what is Gomes saying? And for that matter, what is so interesting about the backstop that Farrell keeps motioning to it?
ReplyDeleteWas it Tichenor's fault that Gomes swung at that pitch too?
ReplyDeleteI agree the time call was too late, but I am a big Red Sox fan and I can tell you that Lester was almost releasing the ball when Hamari called time on Saturday and in Seattle Blaser called time much to late. It seems the rookies call times more.
ReplyDeleteyou ARE being facetious, right? This was VERY quick, so one has to figure Gomes used one of those Magic Words, so it was most likely:
ReplyDeleteGOMES: I called f%%(ing time!!!!
TICH: He started his windup!!
GOMES: F^)# you!!!
TICH: You're gone!!!!!
absolutely the correct call,
ReplyDeletein baseball, you request timeout, you don't call it and it may or may not be granted depending on the situation.
pitcher was in the windup, absolutely the right call,
Or even more likely: "that one's on you"
ReplyDeleteI've had this happen quite a bit during the LL tourney games in our area. There have been a couple instances such as this where I have not granted it and coaches have been bent out of shape, so to speak. During the windup, unless I see lightning or something, I am not granting time! LOL
ReplyDeleteActually it looks like Tichenor explains (after whatever JG says while his back is to the camera) that the pitcher started to pitch and JG keeps running with the "Why do you think I put my hand up?" (with a waving motion). Did not look like much, but then again Tichenor is a stickler and would toss him simply for the vehement argument...
ReplyDelete(So I think it was more for the protesting demonstration that "showed Tichenor up", so to speak!)
ReplyDeleteNope, not being facetious. Gomes was there for quite a bit after the ejection and I'm curious if he was just repeating himself over and over and ignoring Tichenor's explanation or what.
ReplyDeleteNot sure if it helps but if I DON'T grant the batter time, I will at least say "NO" or say "STAY HERE" or something to that effect so that the batter knows the balls live. Not sure if Tich. did this or not but bottom line, Gomes has no business expecting time to be granted on that late of a request.
ReplyDeleteWhat the video did not show was Gomes asked for time earlier in the at bat as Balfour was starting his wind up and was granted time. This was his mind set the whole at bat, to get Balfour off his game.....call time as he is ready to pitch...take him off his timing.
ReplyDeleteAh, who cares. It's the Red Sox.
ReplyDeleteHow do you know? Were you in the conversation? I was always taught to verbally ask for time. But not to take my hands off the bat in case it wasn't granted.. How do you know he didn't verbally ask for it too?
ReplyDeleteI'm just guessing by the way he put his hand in and out 3 times or so. Also I agree with Matt73. Like it was Tichenor's fault he swung at a pitch in the dirt. Gomes knew he was wrong and he just wanted to pass the blame on to someone else. You are right though I don't know for sure.
ReplyDeleteAlso when I say he "said" time I ment to say he "signaled" time.
ReplyDeleteSeriously? Read lips.
ReplyDeleteHe got tossed for "showing" the ump up when he "replayed" his attempt to call time. There were no obvious curse words.
At the very least, be objective.
I am not a Tichenor fan....but this is a great call. You can't call Time after the pitcher is winding up--what's Gomes thinking? Blaming this and a swing at a terrible pitch on the ump? Crazy.
ReplyDeleteThe only negative I see here is that Tichenor didn't run the manager as well. He was out there way too long given what brought him there in the first place. He got lucky!
Then you have no need to call him names. If somebody called an umpire that on this website everybody would be calling that person a "rat."
ReplyDeleteBTW I'm not disagreeing with the umpire.. The rule is pretty clear.
It was a quick hook. You can read Gomes lips. He did not swear. And after he was ejected he said why did you throw me out? He certainly didn't argue long before being tossed, just a couple of seconds. Very quick hook.
ReplyDeleteSwearing is not the only thing that will get you thrown out.
ReplyDeleteHey, Gomes could have been just looking for a high five. He only emphasized that he called time 258438209534 times prior to leaving the field. Got to have that moral support when you whiff on pitches like that!
ReplyDeleteTichenor has not accepted being confronted and yelled at - since his first games in MLB (ask Mike Redmond, Jason Varitek, Ron Gardenhire, or Terry Francona!)...His prerogative not to!
ReplyDeleteDoesn't matter, the bottom line is this... He asked for time, Tichenor thought it was too late, and time was not granted. That's it in a nutshell, so to speak. The only person "in the wrong" here is the batter for not realizing he should have been ready. Life's a bitch and then you marry one, deal with it!
ReplyDeleteHe was almost certainly ejected for his rather emphatic repetition of the time gesture. That sort of thing will usually lead to an automatic ejection.
ReplyDeleteAmazingly there is no 1, 6, or 7 in your number! Crazy stuff.
ReplyDeleteGood call. I don't like when umpires grant time when the pitcher has started his motion. It's a good way to get a pitcher injured. Not to mention that its never automatically granted.
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, I remember seeing Bo Jackson hit a HR after being denied a time out.
In this game alone, look what happened when Gomes, earlier in the game, fired his bat after striking out looking.....nothing. Look what happened when Donaldson from the A's was called out on strikes....nothing. Tichenor finally reacted when a guy turned on him. Great ejection by a very good strong umpire.
ReplyDeleteTT doesn't take any crap. I thought he acted like sort of a dickhead with Francona and Gardenhire in 2011, but he is coming into his own. Strong umpire...
ReplyDeleteMove along, folks....nothing to see here.....though I do want to know who was the person who actually thought this was an incorrect call....REVEAL YOURSELF TO US!!!! =D
