Question for Gil on ball/strike ejections. Lets say there is a pitch 1 inch outside. Are you saying it is 1 inch outside from the pinpoint center of the baseball or 1 inch outside from the outer edge of the baseball? I hope that made sense. I don't like how foxtrax makes a pitch look like it is 6 inches outside and in reality it was probably only 1 or 2 inches outside.
ReplyDeletePitch f/x references the center of the baseball. The working strike zone is 24-inches wide: A 17"-wide home plate, 3" to either side to account for the maximum diameter of a baseball (running total 17+3+3=23) and the SportsVision-cited 1/2" maximum margin of error, to either side, for Pitch f/x (23+.5+.5=24). Because Pitch f/x measures the center of the baseball, that diameter is halved to a radius on either side, creating a 1.7027-foot wide strike zone, or 0.8513 feet to either side (px and pz are reported in feet). If a pitch is reported one inch outside of that 0.8513-foot zone to the left or right (one inch = 0.0833 feet), that indicates the center of the baseball is at least one inch outside of the zone's limits.
ReplyDeleteIn other words, if the center is one inch outside of the zone's center limits as referenced above, the edge of the baseball is likewise one inch outside of the actual strike zone. Basically, the Kulpa Rule accounts for the center of the baseball measurement by expanding the strike zone one radius of a baseball to either side of home plate, plus the margin of error.
We all miss em every now and again but obv this is textbook INT
ReplyDeleteSo basically if the center of the baseball is 1 inch outside the outer edge of the baseball is still going across the plate making the pitch a strike?
ReplyDelete"Time" "Time" "That's Interference" "You're Out and "You're Out"
ReplyDeleteThis one should not have been missed.
HP Umpire Dan Iassogna just ejected PIT C Russell Martin and Manager Clint Hurdle in the Pirates/Braves game for arguing a called ball in the 4th inning. That pitch may be a strike (all I have to go on is the TV zone) but it's been a ball all game so far. The Pirates feed is good for a laugh, they accused Iassogna of missing the call on purpose and then throwing Martin out to cover for it.
