MLB Ejection 011: Chris Guccione (1; Dale Sveum)

HP Umpire Chris Guccione ejected Cubs Manager Dale Sveum for arguing a ball call in the bottom of the 6th inning of the Cubs-Brewers game. With none out and none on, Brewers batter Ryan Braun took a 2-2 fastball from Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija for a called third ball. Replays indicate the pitch was located near the outer edge of home plate and at the thighs (px .821, pz 2.491), the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Brewers were leading, 4-3. The Brewers ultimately won the contest, 5-4.

    Haven't seen the context yet, so can't really comment on the baiting aspect of this ejection, but as far as pitch location itself, it did look outside.

    There was just a crazy play in this game. It is very hard to explain. The Brewers had runners at first and second with nobody out and they tried a double steal. The pitcher caught it right away and tried to pick off Jean Segura who was running to third. Segura retreated back to second where both him and Ryan Braun were. The Cubs tagged both runners out but only Braun was ruled out since it was technically Segura's base. But as Braun was being tagged out Segura ran to FIRST BASE. So Segura started the play running towards third base and ended up at first base. I hope there is a video of it as it was one of the craziest plays I have seen.

    I was watching this live. I could read the pitchers lips and he said "c'mon mother f*cker" Instead of tossing him right there he just took off his mask and stared.

    Yeh... very strange. Segura started going towards first because that is where the Brewer dugout is. He completed running to first cause going back to second would have ment he would have "run into an out".

    Right or wrong, Dale Sveum just saved his starting pitcher there. Good recognition from the manager (then again, when the pitcher yells that the plate umpire is a mother f'er, that's pretty obvious) and although Gooch did react by warning Samardzija, he didn't take the guy out of the game, which their catcher also saw to. So props to everyone involved here except for the pitcher.

    Tough one. This pitch could've gone either way, and some good managing by sveum to protect his pitcher. Some good restraint by guccione too, not to just toss samarzdjia.

    I seek to challenge. I think the ruling should be irrecusable because the reason for Sveum's ejection was more towards Guccione's response [hence, unsportsmanlike-NEC] rather than a balls-strike ejection.

    why did sveum get tossed anyway. he just said "Why did you have to take the mask off"

    Because the first thing Guccione said to him was "get back in the dugout" and instead of doing that Sveum asked that question. Might have been a little quick from Gooch but he is not one who has a lot of ejections so I trust his judgement here.
