James Burke is my brother, he should not be on the board due to a potential conflict of interest.
ReplyDeleteI would actually consider a non umpirefnon participant in the league to join us on the Appeals Board. However, his negative comment regarding being possibly chosen is a total no go. I feel sad about this as it could be interesting to have someone in Mr. Burkes POV on the board but alas if he does not want to be selected then why even place your name for consideration?
ReplyDeleteSomething about this voting seems a tad askew...on multiple occasions, certain people have increased their vote total by about 20 votes in a matter of hours....
ReplyDeleteBoy the voters sure are coming out of the woodwork late for Joe Gravina. He must have one of those buses that shuttles people to the polls...
ReplyDeleteNo one else finds the frequent rapid explosion of votes for certain people somewhat suspicious?
ReplyDeleteThis is absurd and needs to be addressed. Joe Gravina had 70 some odd votes early this evening, and a mere 2 hours later he has over 200? If you believe that happened legitimately, you're a fool. Games are being played here, and it's wrong. I don't know what he (and some of the other leading vote-getters) are doing, but it seems patently unbelievable that over 100 of the site's readers showed up at the last minute to vote exclusively for him. If the legitimacy of the appeals board it to be maintained, this kind of behavior can't be tolerated. Show some respect.
ReplyDeleteGravina just shut down the website w/ the latest barrage of votes. I know I don't have the votes to compete with him.
ReplyDeleteHe's done nothing more than make a mockery of this process. He's a cheater and he should be disqualified. The votes should be scrapped and the current appeals board members should select the new member(s).
ReplyDeleteSandy,
ReplyDeleteThis is being looked into. We will have a solution shortly
Thank you, sir!
ReplyDeletewow- what a shame...obviously something 'funny' has gone on here and has exposed a flaw in the voting system that will need to be addressed for the future. gravina must have had all the hundreds of umpires that work for him vote at the same time! look forward to hearing from you, tmac.
ReplyDeleteHi Gil,
ReplyDeleteI am writing to you to discuss the huge increase in votes that I received in the last day of the appeals board voting.
As I stated in my application, I am an avid follower of this site. I am also the Director of Training for a 100 member umpire organization in the state of Rhode Island. I use your site on a weekly (sometimes daily basis) to share out Case Plays, situation handling, and rules training information.
Because I have done this, I would say approximately 50% of my umpires now see the items on your site faster than I do and ask me questions about it before I even get a chance to look. When my name went up for the voting, it quickly spread around my organization and brought the vote total into the high 70's that were seen just prior to the last day of voting.
On the last day, one of my umpires took it upon himself to post the voting to his facebook account. This is where things got out of hand. I am very aware that this was not the purpose of the voting and that it has damaged the integrity of the vote. I am sorry that I have put you or anyone else associated with the site in a difficult position to rule on this matter. I apologize to the other applicants of the position for they way in which this played out. I know I can be of great assistance to you and the site in matters of appeals. However, if you feel it is appropriate, I will withdraw my application to the appeals board in the interest of the site's integrity.
Yours in Baseball,
