NBA Ejection: Garretson/Collins/Palmer & TFFL Day 111

Referees Ron Garretson (crew chief), Derrick Collins (R) and Violet Palmer (R2/umpire) ejected Pacers center Roy Hibbert for a second technical foul (fighting) in the 4th quarter of the Warriors-Pacers game. With 6:10 remaining in the 4th period, Hibbert became engaged in a fighting incident with Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry and guard Klay Thompson, receiving double technical fouls for unsporting actions with both players, the second of which resulted in his automatic ejection. Also receiving technical fouls were Warriors forward David Lee and Pacers forward David West. At the time of the ejection, the Pacers were leading, 95-85. The Pacers ultimately won the contest, 108-97.

    Holy crow. NBA-TV just did a feature called Barrier Breaker about Violet Palmer being the first woman (with Dee Kanter) in the NBA and then this fight happens in which Palmer does absolutely nothing to try & break up the altercation, which, when she was closest, involved just two players. Meanwhile, Ronnie Garretson has to run from where he was to get in the middle of the scrum, which escalated thanks to Palmer's lack of action.

    The segment states Violet "can do the job" but this latest Pacers fight that was containable when it was one-on-one and Violet was nearby proves otherwise. Shame.

    I want to make it clear, this is not a female referee problem, this is a Violet Palmer mistake or perception of a miscue, given Garretson's hands-on approach. Unfortunately, Ron got absolutely no help and by the time he arrived, it was beyond containment. That's all. As for Derrick Collins, as the complete off official, he's doing what he is supposed to do. Observe and contain the benches. But Palmer was the primary "line-of-fire" ref who had the best opportunity to take care of business as lead. Unfortunately, she failed to do so and took a passive approach, as if she was the off official.

    My job as official is not to stop fights. Once participants make contact with each other, I step back and let whatever happens happen. At the high school and college level it is a big no-no to touch a player. I'm for sure not getting into the middle of a scrum involving very large men. No brainer here.
