HP Umpire Gary Darling ejected Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez for arguing a strike call in the top of the 7th inning of the Brewers-Astros game. With two out and three on, Gomez took a 2-2 cutter from Brewers pitcher Mickey Storey for a called third strike. Replays indicate the pitch was located knee high and over the inner half of home plate (-.577, -.853), the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Astros were leading, 5-4. The Astros ultimately won the contest, 6-5, in 10 innings.

Injury: Dale Scott Hit in Chin, Leaves Nats-D'Backs Game
For the second time this week, Dale Scott's crew suffered an injury as the crew chief himself was drilled in the face mask by a foul ball during Friday's Nationals vs. Diamondbacks contest. With two out and one on in the bottom of the 4th inning, batter Miguel Montero fouled off a 93 mph Stephen Strasburg offering, the deflection striking plate umpire Scott square in the chin portion of his protective mask before both catchers—Washington's Kurt Suzuki and Arizona's Montero—checked on the injured crew chief. As third base umpire CB Bucknor retreated to the umpire's dressing room to don the plate gear and take over behind the dish, Scott received medical attention from the home club before walking off the field.
» » On Saturday, fill-in Mike Muchlinski was called up to replace Scott.
On Wednesday, crewmate Bill Miller was injured in Oakland, leading to his removal from that specific contest. Triple-A call-up umpire D.J. Reyburn had been summoned to replace Miller for the current Arizona series.

Injury Update: Hirschbeck, Cancer-Free, to Return in 2013
Veteran umpire John Hirschbeck is cancer-free and has told friends that he intends to return to MLB service for the 2013 season. Hirschbeck has not worked an MLB contest since September 28, 2011 (BOS-BAL).
The nearly 30-year official and venerable crew chief visited Progressive Field earlier this week, where his scheduled 2012 crew—Mike DiMuro, Jim Reynolds and James Hoye along with interim crew chief Jim Joyce—worked the Tigers-Indians series.
Hirschbeck is a native of Poland, Ohio and still resides in the state, making the journey to Cleveland to visit his crew an obvious choice.
In March, the UEFL reported John Hirschbeck's placement on the Umpires' Disabled List due to a return of testicular cancer, whose associated tumor was surgically removed in late 2009. At the time, doctors had predicted a 10 percent chance of the cancer's return.
In July, Hirschbeck participated in the Circle of Friends Celebrity Golf Classic at Lake Club in Poland, a joint venture between local NFL players and and MLB umpires that raised approximately $50,000 for charity. During the event, Hirschbeck explained that he was declared cancer-free in June, stating: "I don't have my strength back and I'm on blood thinners, so I can't take the chance to get hit ... I guess the big thing is I've got to make a choice whether I will retire or work two more seasons."
In his attempt to return to baseball, Hirschbeck will hope to accomplish a feat neither of the previous two umpires who appeared on the disabled list have been able to: Plagued by bad knees, 18-year umpire Chuck Meriwether transitioned from the DL to retirement after the 2010 season followed by Bill Hohn in early 2012, who retired due to persistent problems with his back, which had caused him to miss games in the past. Following his retirement, Meriwether was hired by the Office of the Commissioner as an Umpire Supervisor, joining Ed Montague as 2011 rookies in that position.
Joining Hirschbeck at the fundraiser was fellow MLB umpire Wally Bell and, from the NFL, Cleveland Browns offensive lineman John Greco, Bills wide receiver Brad Smith, Colts OL Mike McGlynn, Eagles defensive backs coach Michael Zordich and former players L.C. Greenwood and Kevin Mack, who all have ties to the Poland, Ohio region.

1st Female Official in NFL History Debuts as Line Judge
Official Shannon Eastin made NFL history as the first woman to ever officiate a sanctioned League contest, thanks in part to a storied collegiate career and to the ongoing labor dispute that has kept NFL referee favorites Ed Hochuli, Terry McAulay and other regulars shut out as football begins its pre-season schedule.
Shannon Eastin, who has served for four years as a Football Championship Subdivision (Division 1-AA) official in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, previously came under scrutiny from the NFL Referees Associations (NFLRA) for an appearance in the World Series of Poker, though the NFL maintains Eastin's past involvement is of no concern, with NFL spokesman Michael Signora confirming that Eastin, like all replacement officials on the field, had passed the NFL's extensive background check.
In June, the NFLRA filed an unfair labor practice charge against the NFL, alleging the League had employed bad faith practices in negotiating a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with its officials.
In August of 2011, NFL head of officials Carl Johnson anticipated the hiring of a female official, in an ESPN W article featuring Division I: Conference USA referee Sarah Thomas.
Instead of Thomas, however, it was Eastin who took the call to work Thursday's pre-season Chargers-Packers contest and though she may be seen as a "scab" or strikebreaker by those mindful of the present officiating work stoppage, Eastin nonetheless made history just by being on the field as the first female official in National Football League history.

Ejection 114: Tim Welke (1)
3B Umpire Tim Welke ejected Yankees Manager Joe Girardi for arguing a fair call in the bottom of the 5th inning of the Yankees-Tigers game. With two out and one on, Tigers batter Andy Dirks hit a 0-0 sinker from Yankees pitcher Hiroki Kuroda on the fly toward the left field line for a double. Replays indicate the ball landed on the chalk foul line, but are inconclusive as to whether Welke wholly signaled foul, creating a dead ball situation by employing the "Time" mechanic, prior to his final call of a fair ball; Yankees left fielder Raul Ibanez completed his play on the ball and was not put in jeopardy by the ambiguous mechanic, the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Tigers were leading, 3-2. The Yankees ultimately won the contest, 4-3.

Galarraga Gaffe: Umpires Correctly Rule Balk over Sac Fly
Umpires, led by crew chief Angel Hernandez, correctly officiated a balk play during Wednesday's Nationals-Astros game, leading to some confusion from both teams as well as the MASN television broadcast.
With one out and two on in the top of the 1st inning, plate umpire Hernandez ruled that Astros pitcher Armando Galarraga balked while delivering a 2-2 pitch to Nationals batter Adam LaRoche. Because, under pro rules, a balk alone does not cause the ball to become dead, LaRoche's subsequent swing and fly ball to center field kept play alive, baserunner R3 Bryce Harper scoring on an apparent sacrifice fly while R1 Ryan Zimmerman stayed put at first base.
However, after Hernandez and field umpires Ed Hickox, Chris Conroy and Mark Carlson met to conference and discuss the call, the umpires correctly administered prescribed penalties, awarding Harper home plate and Zimmerman second base, while keeping LaRoche at the plate, still with a 2-2 count.
As specified in the UEFL article, "Rule 8.05: It is a balk when—," a balk results in a one-base award for all baserunners unless more advantageous objectives are achieved. Because Harper advanced while Zimmerman did not and LaRoche was put out, the balk was enforced and the result of the play was discarded. Contrary to the broadcaster's depiction, balks are not akin to football penalties and may not be accepted or declined; balks are not subject to team choice or preference.
For those keeping score, Galarraga's precise infraction was of Rule 8.05(m), for Galarraga delivered from the Set Position without coming to a stop. As for LaRoche, he perhaps would have benefited from no balk call at all; instead of a sac fly and RBI, LaRoche subsequently struck out swinging.
In a related story, Bryce Harper is expected to take Thursday off after arguing with Hernandez over balls and strikes on Wednesday. Though Harper was not ejected and Hernandez indicated to a pool reporter that Harper was never close to being tossed, Washington skipper Davey Johnson suggested a poor throw later in the contest may have been caused by the dispute: "That's just a rookie mistake ... I think maybe he took his at-bat with him into the outfield."

Ejection 109: Mike Everitt (2)
3B Umpire Mike Everitt ejected Rockies Manager Jim Tracy for arguing a reversed call (safe) by 1B Umpire Mike Estabrook in the bottom of the 7th inning of the Rockies-Dodgers game. With one on and two out, Dodgers batter Shane Victorino hit a 3-2 slider from Rockies pitcher Adam Ottavino on a sinking line drive to shallow center field, outfielder Dexter Fowler sliding in an attempt to catch the ball. Initially ruled an out, Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly argued, producing an umpire conference and a reversal to a trap. Replays indicate the ball skipped into Fowler's glove off of the grass, the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Rockies were leading, 2-0. The Rockies ultimately won the contest, 2-0.

Ejection 108: Joe West (2)
HP Umpire Joe West ejected Tigers Manager Jim Leyland for Unsportsmanlike-NEC (arguing a warning) in the bottom of the 2nd inning of the Indians-Tigers game. With one out and one on, Tigers batter Gerald Laird hit a 0-1 fastball from Indians pitcher Chris Seddon for a soft ground ball, Seddon arriving at first base as Laird approached. Replays indicate Seddon's attempted tag of Laird's foot did not occur prior to Laird's hand touching the base, producing dissent from the Detroit dugout, from bench player and pitcher Justin Verlander, resulting in a warning issued from West. Replays indicate West's ejection of Leyland concerned this warning, not the safe/out call at first base, the call was irrecusable.* At the time of the ejection, the Indians were leading, 2-1. The Tigers ultimately won the contest, 10-8, in 10 innings.
