3B Umpire Jeff Nelson ejected Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman for arguing a strike (swinging) call in the top of the 8th inning of the Braves-Pirates game. With none out and one on, Freeman attempted to check his swing on a 0-2 slider from Pirates pitcher Chris Resop, the pitch dropping into the dirt around home plate as HP Umpire Bill Welke appealed to Nelson at third on the question of check swing status. Replays indicate Freeman did not attempt to strike the pitch, the call was incorrect. At the time of the ejection, the Pirates were leading, 5-1. The Pirates ultimately won the contest, 5-1.

I'm more shocked that the call is being called correct than I am that JK said he went around. Not even close. JK was ready to go get a glass of chardonnay.
ReplyDeleteWho is JK? Jeff Nelson's initials are JN.
ReplyDeleteThe Pirates' feed showed only one short replay, but from that replay it really didn't look like he swung.
ReplyDeleteAre you serious that you can't believe this call is considered correct? Must be your firs time on this site....

ReplyDeleteI will also challenge this, there is no possible way the biggest Umpire apologists can say with a straight face that this is a swing. It was not even close to being a swing.
After ejection finalization and review, the determination was made to modify the preliminary QOC of "correct" to read "incorrect." Therefore, challenges regarding this play shall be held in abeyance unless the modified QOC of "incorrect" or another aspect of this play (Ejector Classification, Reason for Ejection, etc.) is challenged.
ReplyDeleteHard to get a real good look on the quick game replay, but at first glance, that appears to be a bad call by Jeff Nelson. Not sure what Freeman is doing by waving Nelson into the dugout, as if to challenge him to a fight. This is Major League Baseball, not a grade school playground.
ReplyDeleteDan,
ReplyDeletegood point...It appears as young Freddie is feeling his oats. Challenging Jeff to a fight is a quick way to get on 'the list'. Say hello to wide corners Mr. Freeman
I usually support the umpires' call on check-swings, but I do not have any clue how Nelson ruled that Freeman swung here. It is baffling - the bat barely came off his shoulder.
ReplyDeleteWow. What a terrible call. Dan, are you kidding me? "Appears" to be a bad call? "Young Freddie" is not challenging him to a fight. He is saying that Nelson needs to exit the park as well.
ReplyDeleteYou have won a spot to the playoffs don't complain.
ReplyDeletegood/bad call notwithstanding...Freeman is a beatoff (from personal experience)
ReplyDeleteThis call isnt as bad as paul nauerts earlier in the year.
ReplyDeleteMark Ripperger has ejected Rockies right fielder Andrew Brown.

ReplyDeleteWhat the hell is an "umpire apologist"? If you're going to bash a profession, at least use coherent terms.
As for the call, it is incorrect. That shit happens. The only thing that bothers me about this is that the 1B umpire should not be so anxious to ring up the batter in this instance (which Jeff clearly was).
Despite what the "anti-umpire apologists" think, this is close.
DD4D if you are going to criticize me please be accurate, Jeff Nelson was the third base Umpire not the first base Umpire. As for the term Umpire apologist I have heard it used by many others on this site. I understand it as someone who is always on the Umpires side and blindly defends them no matter what. And I am not bashing the profession, I am as pro Umpire as anybody on this site, as a regular I am surprised you didn't know that. I have a lot of respect for all the Umpires in the MLB, my comment was referring to the fact that the UEFL originally had this call correct, which was just not the case.
ReplyDeleteGood for you! I strongly disagree with the omnipotent powers of umpires like Jeff Nelson and Jerry Meals et al, when instant replays prove them wrong!!!!!
Delete"good/bad call notwithstanding...Freeman is a beatoff (from personal experience) "
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what that means either. Freeman is a solid ballplayer. The biggest *male genital expletive* I can think of is Josh Hamilton. Get some tenacity JH!
"umpire apologist" is a lot better than plumber or rat!
