1B Umpire Brian Knight ejected Tigers Manager Jim Leyland for arguing a safe call in the bottom of the 5th inning of the Tigers-Indians game. With one out and two on, Indians batter Lonnie Chisenhall hit a 1-2 fastball from Tigers pitcher Rick Porcello on the ground to Porcello, who threw to shortstop Jhonny Peralta for the force out at second before first baseman Prince Fielder picked Peralta's throw from the dirt as Chisenhall arrived at the bag. Replays indicate Fielder did not gain possession of the baseball prior to Chisenhall's foot contacting the bag, the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Indians were leading, 4-3. The Indians ultimately won the contest, 7-6.

Brian Knight gets a lot of flack for his calls- but he's a good ump- the tigers are starting to finally realize they have to win to make the playoffs but its getting to be too late
I'm sorry, Brian Knight is not a good umpire.
bastard play 3 sounder with the ball skipping in and possibly taking a lil sound off the catch; always a tough call. Couldn't tell in Real time or in slow mo which explains just how close it was.... Situation was very well handled by Knight who sometimes looks great and other times looks questionable.... He felt like Leyland didn't want to stay got a warning in and hardly said a word
That wasn't the only bastard play - he had two other wackers (both double play balls) the inning before (3 nut cutters in back to back innings)and all of them went against the same team (Detroit). Tough day at the office and regardless if he got them correct or not, when three wackers all go against one team, you can be sure that someone is going to get run. Will give him kudos for how he handled himself during the ejection
Great call, Great look, great handling of situation and letting Leyland look like the desperate rat backed into a corner that he is.
What happened to 169?

LOL, I wonder if he still thinks that was a catch in the Yankee game? (Wasn't it this guy?)
To be honest, the first one looks like it could have gone either way. The second one it looks like he is out. And trust me, I am confident that Fielder knows that as well (hence his reaction).
""Brian Knight gets a lot of flack for his calls- but he's a good ump- the tigers are starting to finally realize they have to win to make the playoffs but its getting to be too late ""
Of course he is good, he would not have gotten this far w/o being competent. However, there is always a bottom 10% or so of a group of workers (in any industry). Knight needs to work his way out of that (like Tichenor did - and now in my opinion Tichenor is one of the better umpires in MLB).
Plus, last month's REFEREE magazine had an article or picture about charity work and it featured Wally Bell and Brian Knight, among others. I give him points for that alone.
Joe West worked the monday tigers-white sox rain out game today but why would they do that when west, muchlinski, holbrook, and drake (fletcher) are the ones supposed to do the pirates-cubs wraparound game later tonight- the one crew that has the wraparound they choose to put in this series. It still has west behind the plate at wrigley tonight, but unless cowboy joe hurries he won't make it in time.
I say Eddings has the plate tonight in Chicago, because I think that DeMuth's crew has only been to Wrigley one other time this year, Opening Day against the Nationals, I could be wrong.
@ DD4D
No, that was Mike DiMuro.
It's in a rain delay in Chicago right now, so there is no way of knowing for sure, but the Cubs host the Reds on Tuesday-Thursday so my guess would be that crew is scheduled for tonights game also. I can tell you it will not be Demuth's crew as the Cubs got him last week in Houston and there must be at least three series in between getting a crew again. Plus they were in LA last series and they usually don't send crews through 2 different time zones in one day. if you are traveling through different time zone you will almost always have a day in between to re cooperate.
diaz, welke, schreiber, everitt in chicago
From the slow-mo those looked like 2 outstanding calls by Knight
I Challange this rulling it sure looks like Fielder gains possesion just prior to the runner toching the bag. It's definitly bang bang but i think Knight is wrong on this one
After review, the Original Ruling has been affirmed in a unanimous 4-0 decision by the UEFL Appeals Board. Four Appeals Board members elected to uphold the ruling.
Per Curiam Opinion:
After careful review of all available evidence, including both the home and away video feeds and replay angles, we find insufficient evidence with which to initiate a reversal of this call, with such evidence tending to indicate the Original Ruling was correct in that Quality of Correctness was correct.
Therefore, the Board affirms the Original Ruling.
