2B Umpire Bob Davidson ejected Rays Manager Joe Maddon for arguing an out call in the bottom of the 8th inning of the Yankees-Rays game. With none out and one on, Rays baserunner R1 Rich Thompson was caught stealing second base, thrown out on a pitchout, Yankees catcher Russell Martin to shortstop Derek Jeter. Replays indicate Thompson was tagged on the backside prior to contacting second base with his hand, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the contest was tied, 3-3. The Rays ultimately won the contest, 4-3.

Why was Madden arguing for so long? The guy was out and Davidson made the correct call. I am surprised that Davidson let him argue for that long before throwing him out.

Not sure what kind of look he had, but looks like Bob got this one right.
Davidson let him argue longer than normal ever since he got suspended. Now he is mr mellow and I dont like it. Was way more fun when he didnt take no shit.

This is a great call. How about ESPN show this call 2,000 times and give credit where it's due!! Davidson was even polite enough to pick up the runner's helmet and hand it back to him... WHAT A GUY!!

ReplyDeleteBob's winning the race for "Most Improved Umpire of 2012". It was probably humiliating for him to get suspended, but he has come back a better umpire. Good for him.
ReplyDeleteDavid Rackley with a controversial out call on an appeal at first base in the 9th inning of a 5-4 Mets/Cards game. He ruled that Andres Torres missed first base on his way to second. Replays showed that Torres appeared to touch the corner of the bag with his heel, and Rackley got the call wrong, in my estimation.
ReplyDeleteYou could call it inconclusive at best, and to me, if you're gonna make a call like that at that critical juncture of the game, it should be an obvious miss, and this was not.

Just because it wasn't an obvious miss on camera doesn't mean it wasnt an obvious miss to someone standing right on it.

He let maddon talk for so long because he understood the situation. Maddon clearly wasn't arguing as much as he does when he is passionate about a call being incorrect. Davidson gave him a long leash in case maddon decided he really didn't want to get thrown out.

As short as Mr. Davidson's leash was in the early part of the season (when HE was doing the baiting), it almost seems like he possibly went too far in the other direction on this one. No question Maddon deserved to go, but I'm not sure this one didn't last a bit too long.
ReplyDeleteI like one former umpire's style -- "You've said enough, I'm going back to my position. If you follow me, you're gone." I forget the originator, but it's effective in my experience.
Didn't see the Torres play, but his base running this year has been atrocious -- stupid decisions, getting picked off, etc. I'd give the benefit of doubt to the umpire.

ReplyDeleteHuge credit to davidson here. I couldn't stand the guy and his antics at the start of the year. Whatever he changed is marvelous. Such calm professionalism is really great to see. He didn't lose his cool, gave maddon plenty of rope to state his case, then ran him when it was clear he wasn't going to leave. Outstanding stuff!

I don't understand how it can be stated that replays show the call to be correct. If I've ever seen a tie, it's here. Advance frame by frame and you can't say that the replays are conclusive in any way.

ReplyDeleteIf it was a tie (which is not mathematically impossible like some folks chirped with the Greinke call weeks ago), then Bob got it right since the runner did not beat the throw/tag.
Maddon's a jerk. At BEST it was a tie, but the slo-mo indicates that Balkin' Bob got it right. How can Maddon get this angry at a call that was that close and which he (Maddon) had no way of seeing from where he was sitting (and which was correct to begin with!)?.
