As the National League dominated the American League en route to an 8-0 shutout in this 83rd All-Star Game, this is the UEFL All-Star Game thread, open for all discussion from controversial plays (there were none) in the 2012 Mid-Summer Classic, to pitch f/x analysis or even umpire uniform discussion.
As previously reported by the UEFL, the 2012 All-Star Umpires are:
HP: Gerry Davis -cc (4th)
1B: Jim Joyce (3rd)
2B: Brian Runge (1st)
3B: Tony Randazzo (2nd)
LF: Lance Barksdale (1st)
RF: Brian Knight (1st)
Balls and Strikes as called by HP Umpire Gerry Davis
Total Callable Pitches: 135 / 150 = 90.0% Accuracy
Called Balls: 98 / 107 = 91.6%
Called Strikes: 37 / 43 = < 90.0%

Haha last time Gerry Davis was behind the plate in the All Star Game, it was the 2002 tie
ReplyDeleteOk, you said uniforms so.... With all umps wearing polo jerseys, why black and not blue? It's Kansas City after all, home of the powder-royal blue shirt.
ReplyDeleteBrian Knight gets the Sandoval fair call in right field, ball struck the vertical yellow line.
ReplyDelete@5:24, the blue shirt is for hot weather, with this break in the heat wave in KC, that opens it up to the standard black shirt, which is pretty expected since this game is a twilight start and will go into the night.
ReplyDeleteIf it was Angel Hernandez at the plate on the other hand, we'd probably see the blue.
Too bad this game doesn't have park audio only. I much rather hear Gerry Davis say "outside" than to hear Joe Buck echo the call a second later..
ReplyDeleteGerry Davis is an avowed black shirt guy.
ReplyDeleteI asked the question about which shirt gets worn once to an MLB ump. He said in most crews, it's up to that day's plate guy. In some crews -- like the Davis crew -- it's not. His guys will wear black, unless it's really hot.
In the old days, when the Royals wore, what I like to call "George Brett pine tar blue", it was sometimes tough on tv to tell the players from the umpires. From a distance, you had to look at pants to see who was who.
ReplyDeleteThe current black shirts have the "classic" umpire look to them - they are the default.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Brian Knight has been busy in that RF corner with fair/foul calls.
ReplyDeletewhy would Gerry Davis only want his guys to wear black, similar to Dale Scott and the blues ? Are base umpires allowed to wear the blazers on the bases like the old days if the guy behind the plate has the plate coat on ?
ReplyDeleteWhat do umpires typically do after games ? Are they usually known to be ferocious drinkers at bars ?
ReplyDelete@6:48 PM
ReplyDeleteNot in the minors! Let me explain: When I umpired DI college, we earned let's say $750 for a weekend series, so we usually would go to the hotel bar our first night, maybe not Saturday if Sunday was a day game/quick turnaround, and then Sunday, if we had time, we'd go drinking after the game before the flight. We'd have some nice pre-game meals or post-game dinners.
When I graduated Wendelstedt's and got hired by PBUC, we stayed at Motel 6s and drove in beat-up vans from site to site. We ate pizza-to-go and really awful food, no bars, there was no time and there was no money. Instead, we sometimes got six-packs, but quality of life in minor league baseball for umpires is really bad.
That's why I went back to college.
For those who are interested, a list of All-Stars who have been ejected this season:
ReplyDelete1. Matt Wieters (Doug Eddings)
2. Carlos Ruiz (Gary Cederstrom)
3. Ian Kinsler (Jeff Nelson)
I believe that is all. Quite a few of them got the boot last year, including Miguel Cabrera (Vic Carapazza), Yadier Molina (Rob Drake), Clayton Kershaw (Bill Welke), Matt Kemp (Ron Kulpa, Ted Barrett, Chris Conroy), Matt Holliday (Marvin Hudson), Jonathan Papelbon (Tony Randazzo), Ian Kinsler (Mike Estabrook), David Ortiz (Mike Estabrook), Ryan Braun (Adrian Johnson, Angel Campos), Justin Verlander (Joe West ?), Jered Weaver (Hunter Wendelstedt), Jim Johnson (Mike Estabrook), Jose Bautista (Bill Welke), David Price (John Tumpane, Dana DeMuth), Elvis Andrus (Andy Fletcher) and maybe more.
@UmpsRule and notice how NONE of the umpires who ejected ANY of those players are working the 2012 All-Star Game (except for Tony Randazzo/Papsmear, but Papsmear is a jerk anyway). Hmmm.....
ReplyDeleteTrue, but then again, Jim Joyce ejected NL Manager Tony La Russa last season.
ReplyDeleteI've noticed Davis doesn't let his guys wear Powder Blue unless it is scorching. Phil Cuzzi was like Angel Hernandez in that he would always and I mean always wear blue. This year he only wears powder blue if the rest of the crew has jackets or like Sunday when it was a day game and 94 degrees. I have a feeling Tim Tschida is the same way because Gooch always wore powder blue and then this year he has followed the same mantra as Cuzzi. Only in day games or when the rest of the crew is in long sleeves (Gooch doesn't wear short sleeves ever behind the plate so he gets this opportunity more than Cuzzi). I like the look of the solid black shirt better, but I think it should be up to the Plate Ump.
ReplyDeleteBTW, Mike Everitt,Angel Hernandez Dale Scott, CB Bucknor and Dan Iassogna only wear powder blue behind the plate and Cuzzi, Guccione and Mike Winters did up until this season.
ReplyDeleteGood job by all the umps tonight. Gerry Davis has his usual tight strike zone, but he was consistent with it. Jim Joyce had a couple of close calls at first base that he nailed. Barksdale and Knight got the boundary calls right. Solid job all around.
