Ejection 063: Tim McClelland (2)

HP Umpire Tim McClelland ejected A's Manager Bob Melvin for arguing balls and strikes in the bottom of the 5th inning of the A's-Diamondbacks game. With two out and three on, Diamondbacks batter Miguel Montero took a 0-1 fastball from A's pitcher Jarrod Parker for a called second ball. Montero would hit the next pitch into deep right-center field for a grand slam home run. Replays indicate that of 12 called balls (not including intentional balls), McClelland missed one (.798, -.14) [coordinates reported in the format of {norm_ht, px}], the second pitch of an early-inning at-bat that resulted in a double. With an accuracy rating of 91.7 percent for these pitches, the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Diamondbacks were leading, 6-1. The Diamondbacks ultimately won the contest, 8-3.

This is Tim McClelland (36)'s second ejection of 2012.
Tim McClelland now has 8 points in the UEFL (4 Previous + 2 MLB + 2 Correct Call = 8).
Crew Chief Tim McClelland now has 3 points in the UEFL's Crew division (2 Previous + 1 Correct Call = 3).
*This ejection has been granted a Post-Inning Exemption (px ranges bound .768 and .935).

Interesting how Tim is with Dale Scott's crew and Dale is with Tim's crew in Seattle.

Why are McClelland's CC points still at 1 on the standings page?

McClellend might not be as good as he once was but he can be good as he ever was once. Pretty good job tonight overall from one of the all-time best ball-strike umpires who ever lived.

Standings page has been updated, it's usually updated once daily, after all games have been played (also depends on when I get home).

Mark Grace indicated Melvin might have felt inclined to get himself dumped just to show that he'll stick up for a young prospect pitcher like Parker. Not really much to argue about in this situation.

Open and shut case in my book, McClelland is one of the best in the game, I think before Jim Joyce was named best MLB umpire in that player survey two years back, Tim was ranked best in the major leagues. Even after Joyce was named MVU (most valuable umpire), I think McClelland was bumped to second place, not a bad career to have.

The proble isn't that the call was right or wrong, the proble is that rain delay McClelland takes an eternity to make the strike call, no one knows what's going on.

Melvin is just frustrated. Diamondbacks can sweep the series on Sunday and the Athletics are slipping in the AL West. That's probably the motivation behind this ejection, trying to light a fire.

@Anon12:16am,

Tim makes a verbal call at the same time as every single other umpire in the Bigs. The catcher and batter can hear Tim right away after his call. You should really know this, it's common knowledge. His mechanic is delayed, but what your not understanding is the call has been made well before you see his mechanic.

This is an old time mechanic. You separate the judgemnet from the mechanic, it's smart and a classy way to call balls and strikes.

Who was it, Doug Harvey who changed umpiring to add the emphasis of waiting on making calls until you fully see the play? One of those Hall of Famers was the one who came up with advanced timing.

A few observations:

Yes, HOF'er Doug Harvey changed the way we all do timing. Well desreved HOF honor for a great man of baseball. Bruce Froemming will be next in, as the all time leader in games called, and then, personally, Tim is a legit HOF candidate.

A few years back, I changed my stance from the knee to the box (REAL umpires on the site know what I am talking about), similar to what Tim had done. I had questions about doing off season work to make the transition better physically and mentally for me. On a whim, I emailed the MLB office, asking them to forward my question to Tim. I was stunned to have an email from Tim within 24 hours, and we have stayed in casual email contact ever since. He is a true gentleman, and a great ambassador for umpires.

Lastly, some posters believe Tim is past his prime. In my dreams, I am half as good as Tim on his worst day. Some of you who don't get it will call me a fan boy or a jock sniffer...have at it....Tim is literally and figuratively a giant among umpires, and the real umpires on this site will undretand what I am expressing.

@Bill
Icouldn't agree more. I dont get why it's so trendy to say Tim is past his prime when he has more umpiring ability in his little finger than the rest of us have combined. If that man is past his prime, then I have little to no hope for the future of MLB umpires. But, you're right, I don't think the non-umpires quite understand that.
