1B Umpire Jeff Nelson ejected Detroit Tigers First Base Coach Tom Brookens for Unsportsmanlike-NEC in the top of the 2nd inning of the Tigers-Red Sox game. With none out and none on, Tigers batter Prince Fielder came to bat, but prior to the first pitch of the top of the 2nd, Brookens was ejected Nelson for arguing. In the top of the 1st inning, with one out and none on, Detroit Tigers batter Brennan Boesch grounded out to Red Sox shortstop Mike Aviles to first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. Replays indicate that Boesch touched first base just prior to when Gonzalez possessed the throw from Aviles. However, because this ejection occurred beyond the half inning break immediately following the half inning in which the call occurred, the ejection is not eligible for a post-inning exemption.* It is also unknown if this is the exact reason for ejection, but this was the only visibly close call made prior to the ejection. There has been speculation that it may have been due to a disagreement about Brookens' placement in the coach's box. The call was irrecusable. At the time of
the ejection, the contest was tied, 0-0. The Tigers ultimately won the contest, 7-3.
This i
s Jeff Nelson (45)'s first ejection of 2012.
Jeff Nelson now has 2 points in the UEFL (0 Previous + 2 MLB + 0 Irrecusable Call = 2).
Crew Chief Tim Tschida now has 3 points in the UEFL's Crew division (2 Previous + 1 Irrecusable Call = 3).
*This call is not eligible for a post-inning exemption under UEFL Rule 6-5-c-2, therefore the reason for ejection is Unsportsmanlike-NEC and an irrecusable call.
This is the 55th ejection of 2012.
This is the 6th Coach ejection of 2012 (non-Managers).
This is Tom Brookens 2nd ejection of 2012, most for Coaches (non-Managers).
Last year, Texas Rangers First Base Coach Gary Pettis was the only Coach (non-Manager) ejected multiple times (twice).
This is the Detroit Tigers seventh ejection of 2012 (most in Majors).
Video:
Brookens argues prior to the beginning of the top of the 2nd and is ejected by annoyed Nelson
On the radio, they were speculating that maybe it was because Brookens was outside the coaches box. Apparently that's not why, but how many coaches get tossed twice in about a week?
ReplyDeleteJeez what is wrong with Tigers coaching staff. 6 ejections in 8 days. This is just getting ridiculous. You should know you can't mention a blown call you saw on replay. Happened to Hurdle by Holbrook last year and Brookens Today.
ReplyDeleteEven with a light schedule, the Tigers find a way to get someone tossed.
ReplyDeleteDo announcers have to pass a test to show just how stupid they are before they are hired? "Jim is tired of this crew". Well I bet Nelson got tired of a first base coach acting like a little girl too, hence the reason he got tossed.
ReplyDeleteThose big, bad umpires again, just picking fights and "Inserting themselves into the game".
This crew is not the best, thats for sure.
ReplyDelete@ Zac
ReplyDeleteThe Tigers announcers are not usually very hard on the umpires, so let's not make them out to be as bad as say: Harrelson, Palmer, Fosse, Bob Carpenter, etc.
55 ejections this regular season. Tigers have 7. 27 are spread between just 6 teams. Meanwhile, 8 teams don't yet have one.
ReplyDeleteSounds to me like there are a few clubhouse cultures that could stand an adjustment. What did Leyland say the other day about everyone being accountable . . . ?
With just three games on the MLB schedule, Jeremy and I were planning to take the day off. So goes the best laid plans of mice and men.
ReplyDeleteThat very well maybe the Futures Game, but we have an ejection then if there is someone in the Tigers organization playing, or the Home Run Derby...quite possibly the day off after the All-Star break when there is NO Major League Baseball.
ReplyDeleteI'm a newbie so go easy.........so this is Jeff's first ejection and he's my primary umpire. Why do my primary umpire points still show 0?
ReplyDeleteTXWrangler,
ReplyDeleteWe'll update the points soon, don't worry. We have to go through our spreadsheet and update the points. We have you down for two points for this ejection, but if it still shows zero after a few days leave a comment or e-mail either of us.
I bet I know why Brookens waited until the next inning to get heaved: He knew the call would be irrecusable at that point and he has Nelson as one of his umpires. He didn't want to get negative points.
ReplyDelete@umpsrule
ReplyDeleteIf that were the reason he should say that in an interview. That would be awesome, and pretty funny.
@Jeremy
ReplyDeleteMaybe some umpire can officially eject Chris Berman from the Home Run Derby... Might not be able to get that day off, either.
UmpsRule, c'mon, homie. Just as you say the Tigers announcers aren't usually hard on the umpires neither is Fosse. He was a bit lost on the Laz Diaz EJ a week or so ago, but he says a lot of good things about umpires as well. He doesn't deserve to be lumped in as an umpire hater. Maybe we should all stop commenting about the announcers and realize they are going to see it their own way. Perhaps I'll watch these videos muted from here on out.
ReplyDeleteFirst emmel ejects brookens and now nelson, who's next, jerry layne?
ReplyDeleteYou can tell when a umpire likes ejecting someone, but when you see the replay, u can also see they say ur gone!!! or boom!!! or some stupid remark. Or shrug the shoulders, tough guy kind of attitude i find it very funny, i.e. JEff nelson shrugs his shoulders when throwing someone out, i.e. 8/19/11 ejected alexei ramerez, ball and strikes, correct call. Shrugs his shoulder at the 13th second mark
ReplyDeleteThe Longer the arugment between the player maneger etc agianst the umpires, the umps win all the time and enjoy it, for them there is nothing to lose, FACT, teams, lose players, close pithhes, calls, fines, etc. And what i don't understand when there is an arugment between a player or manager etc agiasnt an umpire they would walk away have one more word, but have their back to the ump, nope your Gone!!! haha fans get to have a good show to watch
ReplyDeleteI don't want the umps to be accountable only becuase they won't stop with the ejections, and we need ejections, close call sports needs ejections. haha but it should be fair. Keep em coming boys, has their ever been 250, or 300 ejections in a year, that would be way too much, its a 162 game season?
ReplyDeleteJeff "perfect game" Nelson is the definition of Big League umpire.
ReplyDeleteGee, I wonder why Leyland stayed in the dugout. He left Brookens out there as if to say, "Jeff, I haven't said anything".
Nobody is better than Jeff and Tim.
Tony Randazzo is a good underrated umpire in my opnion, watching the interfecernce play in the dogers brewer game, looks like a good call. he not a strict ump and dosn't throw a lot of players out at all expect the tiff between varitek and paplebon 6/4/11. I don't understand why some umps have visors in their helmets, i.e randazzo, foster, wegner rapunano, diaz? and not all, if its suppose to help u than everyone ump should have it,
ReplyDelete^^^ oh i forgot bout tim tschida, has a visor too.
ReplyDeletePaul Nauret is a good ump, wouldn't be surpires to see him in the playoffs or even the all star game
ReplyDelete@11:52 PM,
ReplyDeleteSince the leagues merged, MLB hit a high of 289 ejections in 2003 before dropping to 236 in 2004 and 237 in 2005.
I think that if you are a crew working a Tigers series this year, you better take turns ejecting, otherwise you'll get carpal tunnel from typing up all the reports.
ReplyDeleteIf Luciano, Haller and Davey Phillips had had to file reports over the Internet, they would have busted MLB's data plan during Orioles series....
@11:52 PM,
ReplyDeleteWhen using the number of games as a point of comparison to number of ejections, it's not 162. It's 162 games per team x (30 teams/2 (cause it takes 2 teams for 1 game)) = 2430. So the high of 289 in 2003 works out to about 1 ejection for every 8.5 games played.
At least I think that's right. Someone smarter can check my math and logic.
Jon Terry is making himself look pretty dumb here. Look at the history of botched calls from this crew, there is a reason why the Tigers.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, but the numerous "Oh, that's a tough angle!" or "You try to see that in real-time!" excuses just don't cut it.
@Anon 2:53: There is a reason why the Tigers...what? Maybe you should actually finish your sentences before calling someone else dumb.
ReplyDelete@BAPACop: I saw that but I thought you could figure it out for yourself. I guess not.
ReplyDelete@Anon 2:53pm,
ReplyDeleteSaying JonTerry looks dumb, is by far the dumbest post I've ever read.
Anon 2:53, ridiculous. I don't care how bad any crew is, having six ejections on your staff, including four coach ejections (!), in the course of a week or two is a joke. Most teams don't have more than one or two base coach ejections all year, if that. It's not rocket science, they are frustrated by their poor play recently and are taking it out on the umpires. Maybe their excuse is that it "fires up the team," but if that's what it takes to motivate a major leaguer, that's even more of a joke.
ReplyDeleteAs I understand it, Leyland is quite opposed to the idea of getting thrown out to fire up the team. Try to consider Detroit's perspective: they are vastly under-performing and they don't need blown calls to make it worse.
