HP Umpire Gary Darling ejected Indians Manager Manny Acta and pitcher Jeanmar Gomez for throwing at, and third basemen Jack Hannahan for fighting in the bottom of the 3rd inning of the Indians-Royals game. With none out and none on, Royals batter Mike Moustakas took a 1-0 sinker for a hit by pitch. Replays indicate that the previous 0-0 pitch and the 1-0 pitch were inside and belt high. Gomez was immediately ejected by Darling, and both benches subsequently cleared for the second time in the game.^ Replays indicate Hannahan quickly left his third base position. The calls were irrecusable.* At the time of the ejections, the Indians were leading, 5-0. The Indians ultimately won the contest, 11-9, in ten innings.

Is it just me, or are the Indians always involved in bench clearing incidents?
ReplyDeleteI would say yes they are.
ReplyDeleteFirst, there was the Gary Sheffield-Fausto Carmona fight in 2008 when Sheffield charged the mound from first base.
In 2009, there was a minor episode with the Mariners, a run-in between Cliff Lee and Carlos Gomez, and a scene with the Rays which saw Kerry Wood throw two pitches near BJ Upton and Victor Martinez having angry words with Joe Maddon.
In 2010, the Indians and Red Sox had a fight that led to the ejections of Cleveland coach Steve Smith, pitcher Jensen Lewis, and Boston's Josh Beckett.
Last year, Carmona hit Mark Teixeira, and Joe Girardi and Manny Acta wound up yelling at each other. The next day, Mitch Talbot got tossed after another Yankee got hit. Remember, the Yankees had had several batters hit around that time span.
Also last year, Carlos Carrasco got ejected for throwing a pitch over Billy Butler's head. Interestingly enough, on the Royals feed from this game, you can see John Hirschbeck sternly shooing Jack Hannahan away from the scene. In this case, the umpiring crew did a commendable job of keeping things calm.
Earlier this year, Choo caused the benches to empty by walking out towards the mound after being hit. Choo once again played a role in aggravating things today.
So yeah, I would say it's not just you. The Indians have been involved in several of these things lately.
You forgot about Ubaldo in spring training this year!
ReplyDeleteOops, you're right. I did miss that one.
ReplyDeleteI think Hannahan should have been ejected the first time the benches cleared when he went after the pitcher. At any rate, it is nice to see some significant action on the umpiring front. It will be interesting to see if there is any more bad blood tomorrow.
Was Acta tossed for arguing, or just because of a previous warning?
ReplyDeleteThe warning.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I'd imagine both teams will be warned before the start of tomorrow's game.

ReplyDeleteThis is the video of the Choo plunking that led to the warnings. If Choo is going to react like this every time he gets hit this will be a long season for him and the Indians. Grow up! People get hit by pitches sometimes.
"Check out Ned Yost, that's bringing back memories of the day. We used to fight all the time in baseball, of course, it's not condoned" - Rex Hudler, the professional "bringing back memories of the day" analyst.
ReplyDeleteInteresting fact. Manny Acta was the last AL Manager ejected during last season(last day of the regular season) and the first AL manager ejected during this season.
ReplyDeleteSanchez is the one who broke Choo's thumb last year he has a right to be mad. Seems to me pitchers are trying to hit him this year , so I don't blame him for saying something. The umpires aren't protecting him so his team will. And as for Hannahan the first time he went to Sanchez was to get him away from Choo, Samchez even admitted it after the game. Getting hit is part of the game but so is protecting your team. You hit my guy I hit yours it's just baseball. And every team has fights and the benches clear it's not just the Indians .
ReplyDeleteI said the 15th for the first fight, isn't that just as close as the 13th?
ReplyDelete@Nathan I would assume they're going by Price is Right rules. Closest without going over....
ReplyDeleteThis is already the second time this year Choo has caused the benches to empty. Compare that to Delmon Young, who was hit three times in the first two games of the Tigers-White Sox series. He didn't incite a ruckus. Choo should follow his example.
ReplyDeleteAlso, yes it is true that other teams have fights and benches-clearing episodes. Nobody said it was just the Indians.
Here is watch Choo had to say:
ReplyDelete"I know he didn't hit me on purpose," said Choo, who now has been hit three times already this season. "But still, I have a memory of last year."
That memory led to his manager and two of his teammates being ejected.
@11:33 am, rulebook just says "closest."
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteAnon 11:33 AM is correct, the intent was closest without going over; however, because we did not clearly specify this, all 2012 prop predictions (including subsequent rounds of props) will award points to ALL wagers equidistant from the correct date/number/name/response, regardless of the direction. Nathan receives the points!
ReplyDeleteAdd one point to mtn335, T-11th place with 2 point.
