HP Umpire Joe West ejected Yankees Manager Joe Girardi for arguing a strike call in the bottom of the 7th inning of the Tigers-Yankees game. With none out and none on, Yankees batter Russell Martin took a 1-2 cutter from Tigers pitcher Octavio Dotel for a called strike three. Replays indicate that the strike three pitch was thigh high and over the outside corner of the plate.* The previously two called strikes were also both within the bounds of the strike zone, the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Tigers led, 6-5. The Yankees ultimately won the contest, 7-6.
This is Joe West (22)'s first ejection of 2012.
Joe West now has 4 points in the UEFL (0 Previous + 2 MLB + 2 Correct Call = 4).
Crew Chief Joe West now has 1 point in the Crew Division (0 Previous + 1 Correct Call = 1).
*The strike three pitch had a px value of 0.727, within the always a strike horizontal range (< 0.768). Therefore, the call is correct pursuant to UEFL Rule 6-2-b-1, also known as the Kulpa Rule.

I was listening on the Tigers radio broadcast and it was not the first time the Yankees had been upset with West. However, there apparently was not much question as to the accuracy of the call, and the announcers speculated that maybe the incident was due to something that happened earlier.
Joe West had a bad day behind the plate. In the 6th inning, strike 1 on Eric Chavez was not even close
Jeff Kellogg, one of the quieter umpires in the MLB, tackled a fan who ran onto the field an slid at home plate. Pretty cool!

I don't know why, but that picture looks wrong in so many ways
And the catcher had a pretty bad day watching these 3 called strikes go by and the 2nd pitch being given to him, that could have been rung up as a strike.
@anon 8:53:I am anon 8:46. I completely agree. LOL. Still pretty awesome that Kellogg tackled the perp though. That is the last ump I would expect to do that.
Video of West tossing Girardi:

Sounds like Girardi had been chirping all night, which he always does, and Joe had enough.
A little later than Joe usually has his first ejection, it was 4/22 last year, but it was only a matter of time.
Pound for pound, Michael Kay may be the worst announcer for any sport. He would probably be a homer for a game of checkers, if some one other than the Yankess would be dumb enough to hire him. Add to that the dumb ass drivel of the ten or so former Yankees who rotate in and out of Yankee broodcasts and you have enough knowledge of baseball rules to fill a thimble.
On the bright side.... you gotta love the "get the f$&^ outa here" attitude of a left handed ejection with an immediate turn of the back by the cowboy.
2+2=2? I think there was a typo.
I'm not sure what the complaint is about Michael Kay here. I am a little surprised that Kay mentioned that the toss was left-handed. I guess I wouldn't have thought that many broadcasters would realize you are supposed to toss with your right hand (like it makes a big difference). I never knew that until I read "As They See 'Em."
As for the other guy who complains about the look on West's face, get real please. People gripe when the umpires yell back, so don't gripe when they hold their tongues, okay?
As an aside, that was a rather impressive 'leap' by Girardi. However, kicking dirt on home plate could get him in some trouble.
And if the announcers were impartial and busted on the players like they do the umpires, they would not have a job.
I've been listening to today's Yankees-Tigers game and it's now 2-0 (Yankees) when it should be 0-0. The home plate umpire is calling a horrible game. Brooks Baseball graphs aren't available until after the game, but I can't wait to see them. Especially Jeter's second innning at bat. It's a shame the umpire has to affect the game like this.

You've been listening to the game, yet you know the umpire is calling a horrible game? That's interesting.... I wish I could see through a radio broadcast.
@ Anon 11:09
To be fair, the Tigers radio announcers are not known for railing on the umpires. Also, Rob Drake is behind the plate and he hasn't exactly earned the benefit of the doubt like most umps have.
@Anon 11:09 - I should have clarified: I am listening and also following along on my iPad's MLB At Bat '12 app. It shows the approximate location of all pitches.
Maybe Girardi was on his iPAD or somebody behind him was on their iPAD telling the location of all pitches from pitch f/x as the game was in progress, before he went out to argue. Too bad he wasn't given the location of these 3 pitches, or the source was not pitch f/x.
Well, here's the at-bat, take a look at the fifth pitch. Should have been out: http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfxVB/cache/numlocation.php-pitchSel=453286&game=gid_2012_04_29_detmlb_nyamlb_1&batterX=17&innings=yyyyyyyyy&sp_type=1&s_type=3.gif
@Anon 12:54 Can you try re-phrasing that? I'm not sure I understand what your point is. What does Girardi have to do with it?
Although I don't like what Joe's ejection technique has become, from either hand...
I love the look on his face when Girardi is yelling at him. It's classic, "I don't really give a sh!t about what you are saying right now."
Gotta love that argument: "It's embarrasing Joe, that pitch is outside. Don't laugh Joe, don't laugh!"
Joe West needs to mind his own business. I don't think he has that good of hearing because he is old. Why was Joe West laughing? He was just trying to be a smarty pants
@ Anon 1:46
If West's hearing isn't that good, then how could he hear whatever he heard?
