Ejection 007: Lance Barrett (1)

HP Umpire Lance Barrett ejected White Sox Pitching Coach Don Cooper for arguing ball calls in the top of the 9th inning of the Orioles-White Sox game. With two out and none on, Orioles batter Matt Wieters took a 3-0 fastball from White Sox pitcher Hector Santiago for ball four. Replays indicate that the 0-0 pitch and 2-0 pitch from Santiago to Wieters were within the bounds of the strike zone, the call was incorrect. At the time of the ejection, the contest was tied, 4-4. This Orioles ultimately won the contest, 10-4, in ten innings.

This is Lance Barrett (94)'s first ejection of 2012.
Lance Barrett now has -2 points in the UEFL (0 Previous + 3 AAA + -1 Penalty - 4 Incorrect Call = -2).
Crew Chief Gary Darling now has 3 points in the Crew Division (3 Previous + 0 Incorrect Call = 3).

Congrats to Lance Barrett on his first career EJ! He becomes the first ump this season to reach that milestone.

I believe four umps accomplished the feat last year: John Tumpane, Mark Ripperger, Alan Porter, Vic Carapazza

Chris Conroy picked up his first las year also. Manny Gonzalez,Clint Fagan,Tyler Funnemann and Mark Lollo are the only umpire who have worked an MLB game and not recorded and ejection.

David Rackley is another active one with no EJs.

Well here is the brooks baseball at bat in which the EJ happened.. i'm sure this will be posted shortly... 2 pretty big misses

Brooks baseball may have those as strikes, but nobody was expecting either of those pitches to be strikes at that ballfield - especially Perzynski, who caught the 0-0 pitch underhanded. In MLB, that's never a strike. That's hardly a strike in high school. The 3-0 pitch was up on the batter in his position, borderline at best, not an obvious strike. I think that somebody miscalibrated the pitch tracker. The ejection wasn't over that at-bat, it was the 1-2 pitch ruled inside 3 batters before that that was preceded by a ball put in the left field seats.

I have no horse in this race, except for defending umpires when it suits me, and while Barrett didn't have the best game, he was right on the topic of this ejection.

In the Sox feed you can clearly see Barrett tell Cooper you were talking pitches and I warned you twice, and Cooper saying that I wasn't talking to you. Which we all know is crap especially in this case since Barrett had gone to the mound to break up a conference and the ejection happened while Cooper and Barrett were walking back. The O's announcers were much harder on Barrett than the Sox guys which I think should surprise everyone.

I think the argument really came as a result of the Reimold AB leading off the inning where a 2-2 borderline pitch was called a ball and was followed with a home run.

@youthministeradam It doesn't surprise me. Jim Palmer is notorious for badmouthing the umpires on air and he usually does it so much that he draws reactions out of his partner. As bad as Palmer is, Rob Dibble during his tenure with the Nats was 10x worse. Gary Thorne I was surprised because he's usually neutral. What many fans fail to realize is that usually the view of the plate from behind the mound is angled so that the outside and inside corners are distorted. So like the guys in the dugout, we can really only truly discern high and low.

@youthministeradam It's not really a surprise to hear that the Orioles announcers were hard on an umpire. After all, who cares if the ump was right or wrong? He's the umpire. Therefore, (almost) everyone hates him. Particularly Orioles announcers.

Based on Retrosheet data, this is Don Cooper's fourth career ejection. Starting in 2006, his ejections occurred every other year. If the pattern continues, he will be tossed again in 2014.

I was watching that game and Barrett totally missed that strike 3 call on Reimold. Game should've ended with a Sox win if it weren't for that inept douche. All Balls & Strikes should be called through the pitch tracker- fans are the real loser in this B.S. "human element". All Sox fans were cheated out of a win last night.

@FanSportsDemand: Nice to hear from you, Hawk! You bring so much to the conversation!

@FanSportsDemand said...

Hey anonymous- I was speaking for ALL baseball fans. We are all cheated by this "human element" and with the advancements in technology there is no place for it any longer.

Anonymous said...

@FanSportsDemand And if it was called strike 3, this thread would be 4 comments shorter. By the way, I am a baseball fan and I don't feel cheated.

How are robots going to break up fights and make interference rulings?

Anonymous said...

And if you say that they would take away only balls and strikes from the umps, good luck getting the umps to go along with that.

When a manager makes a bad decision strategy-wise, does the umpire storm into the dugout, slam his mask to the floor, pound the water cooler with a bat, and throw a bag of baseballs onto the field? No, the umpires let the managers and coaches do their job. Apparently, it is too much to ask the same from the managers and coaches. Although frankly, we should probably just have the teams managed by robots, because the human element in managing is cheating all baseball fans.

Anonymous said...

To be fair, umpires don't care who wins. Managers and players do.

Anonymous said...

That's true, but the point is that the human element is part of baseball and there is no way to eliminate it.

Anonymous said...

Well, I guess they won't post a video for this one.

4/15 Hou/Mia--Marlins commit 3 errors in the 9th, 4/14-CHC/Stl-Castro makes pair of throwing errors, 4/10-Atl/Hou-Braves commit 4 errors vs Astros, 4/9--LAA/MIN-Twins commit 2 errors on Morales grounder
4/6-Col/Hou-Astros commit 4 errors

Horsepoop baseball, I feel cheated by the players. Fans are the real losers with this BS horsepoop baseball by these inept douches and their human error element.

Anonymous said...

@Anon 7:43. Absolutely right. You are absolutely right. In fact, the broadcasting can be just as bad. They need to have computerized voices calling the games. The human element mispronounces names from time to time. We fans are being robbed.

FanSportsDemand,

Calling an umpire an "inept douche" is unacceptable and unnecessary. Please refrain from such ad hom attacks in the future, they don't have value in our discussions.

Big Marc said...

Thanks Jeremy, saved me one or 23 paragraphs.

However, @fanssprotsdome, aka the hawks's point is not lost one me.
All balls and strikes called by the computer.
Let's do it. It's only going to cost a quadrillion dollars. Redundant systems in every park, purchashing of unwritten software. Demolition of umpire room.
I certainly wouldn't feel cheated because after the implementaion of the Hawks idea, I would be able to enjoy my Big League ball clubs 9 hour games. Now that's value.
Of course, if you came to the game wanting to see an arguement, you would feel cheated.

Anonymous said...

But Big Marc, you are overlooking the fact that obviously there is no more valuable way to spend money than on a computerized balls and strikes system. I mean, who cares about using the money on cancer research or to help starving people in poverty-stricken countries? After all, those causes would be to help humans and we're trying to eliminate the human element, remember?

How about all umpire haters get the hell off this site?

Jon Terry said...

I would very much like to see this tape, so I can see how the pitches were handled.

Also, I would like to challenge the scoring math. 0+3-1-2 does not equal -2, it equals 0.

Lindsay said...

Looks like we pulled a Dale Scott. End result is indeed -2, though the math should read 0+3-1-4.

Jeremy Dircks said...

That would be an incorrect on yours truly.

Jeremy Dircks said...

Marc,
I appreciate the words ad you refraining. Not worth it picking a fight. You can be mad about a call, but absolutely no need to use that language. And anyways, if Lance Barrett is inept, then may there be mercy on soooo many umpires (outside the major leaguers) in the world because there isn't many out there as good as Lance Barrett.
