HP Umpire Mike DiMuro ejected Giants Manager Bruce Bochy for arguing a safe call in the bottom of the 7th inning of the Giants-Diamondbacks game. With one out and three on, Diamondbacks batter Chris Young hit a 0-0 slider from Giants pitcher Sergio Romo to third baseman Pablo Sandoval, who threw onto catcher Buster Posey for an attempted force out of Diamondbacks runner R3 Aaron Hill. Replays indicate Posey failed to tag home plate after fielding Sandoval's throw, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Diamondbacks were leading, 7-6. The Diamondbacks ultimately won the contest, 7-6.
This is Mike DiMuro (16)'s first ejection of 2012.
Mike DiMuro now has 4 points in the UEFL (0 Previous + 2 MLB + 2 Correct Call = 4).
Crew Chief Jim Joyce now has 1 point in the UEFL's Crew division.

Wrap: Giants at Diamondbacks, 3/25/12
Video: Hill scores on error charged to Posey, Diamondbacks take lead (Arizona feed)
Video: Bochy ejected for arguing the call (San Francisco Feed)
I know Posey doesn't want to get hurt at home plate again after his injury last year, but at least put your foot somewhere near the dish! And Bochy is fit to be frustrated—his Giants have dropped two straight to Arizona and just blew a huge 6-0 lead, seven unanswered for Arizona and they're looking to score more in the bottom of the 8th. Giants are on the cusp of being swept by their main rivals in the NL West, a team San Francisco was so certain they were going to have no problem beating this year.
ReplyDeleteD-Backs have committed 5 errors, the Giants have 3—what a strange game!
Super pumped. I love ejections. I hope they do a good job of posting the videos this year. That games sounds like it was a fun one to watch if you are a d-backs fan.
ReplyDeleteLOL - Is that Mark Grace as the analyst-broadcaster? He goes 180 degrees like THAT:
ReplyDelete"Boy, I don't know there."
"That's a bad call. The Giants got a bad break there."
"Oh, that is a GOOD call! He was never on the bag. He was never on the plate. His toe was never on the plate."
"That is a GOOD call by Mike DiMuro"
This is a call that never happens anywhere but home plate. Why? Because home plate is flat, anywhere else, the fielder will be able to kick the base. Should be neighborhood though.
ReplyDeleteI guess Mark Grace decided to celebrate Easter by having egg on his face. In all seriousness, the first angle he saw made it look like a blown call. At the least the announcers did eventually credit DiMuro with being right. I love the reaction DiMuro had to whatever Bochy said at around the 1:10 mark.
ReplyDeleteAlso, though the Giants announcer wasn't too quick to rip the umps, he was too quick to blast the official scorer. After all, if Posey was off the plate then it doesn't matter where the throw was. He couldn't have gotten the force out anyway.
Here's the other broadcast with a longer clip of the argument following the ejection.

Way to not show the actual ejection, MLB.com!
ReplyDeleteWell it would appear the tunnel people watching the video relayed bad info the Bochy who had something to say from the hole after saying his peace on the field and was summarily run.. and appropiately so.... Here's the thing that is interesting if you can read lips... Bochy says, "you're not being straight with me" and they are both pointing to the tunnel... some player by watching the monitored probably reacted on the replay like Mark Grace did... And by looking at the 1st replay it looked like a bad call but as we talk about a lot on here beware of the 2nd camera.... and DiMuro makes a great call that isn't easy to make.. Takes guts to make a call like that Kudos to Mike!!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see there was an ejection. I wanted to take the situation on a spin through my analysis.

If you go to the third tab and click on HP umpire and Safe/Out for the ejection reason, guess which manager is at the top of the list? Bruce Bochy! Too cool. It's also worth noting that Mike DiMuro has never ejected anyone for a safe/out argument while the home plate umpire.
Also, using the second tab, click on Safe/Out and you'll see that in the last four years:
1. 60% of the time the HP umpire is correct
2. There's only been one ejection on a safe/out call with the HP umpire that has taken a team from a losing position to a win
It doesn't look like Bochy picked the best situation to argue.
Good start to the year. All those cameras and no show of the actual ejection. Hint MLB you can show the replay after the ejection!
ReplyDeleteboy I thought the call might have been incorrect until I saw that good angle
ReplyDeleteI will admit that I did not think the first ejection of 2012 would happen during an opening day series
ReplyDeleteWith Ejection 001 from Mike D. I can say this season is off and running!
ReplyDeleteGlad we got that first one out of the way, now it's time for the rest of the season to begin! Great call by DiMuro, by the way. I know Giants fans will think otherwise and call Mike the worst umpire in MLB and the world, but the call was great and fully 100% supported by the instant replay angle. ESPN actually took the footage and blowed it up, highlighting the gap between Posey's foot and home plate. Good call yes, bad positioning by the catcher, yes.
ReplyDeleteBochy gets ejected a lot it looks like. According to the historical data page on Bochy (http://portal.closecallsports.com/historical-data), that's now 17 ejections since 2008, though it looks like the first with Mike DiMuro. If an umpire was going to throw him out, looks like the wise bet would be with Gary Darling, three times in that span.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of which, do Giants fans still have that idea that Darling has a vendetta against San Francisco? Each ump has their own team (Doug Eddings = Angels, Joe West = Phillies...Red Sox...Yankees, etc.), I'd surmise Darling is still the Giants.
What about Hunter Wendelstedt and the Twins? And I seem to remember Joe Girardi having some issues with Paul Emmel and his crew in 2010.
ReplyDeleteAnd definitely don't forget Joe West vs. the White Sox. Or is it just Hawk Harrelson vs. West?
Of course, it all depends on your perspective. Some might say that it is the team that has the vendetta against the umpire and looks for a reason to cause trouble.
Buster might get this call if the throw doesn't take him toward the infield. Still a good call, though.
ReplyDeleteBill Hohn vs Bobby Cox was another good one. Of course both guys have now retired.
ReplyDeleteWhy would a parent hate there kid so much that they name him buster?
ReplyDeleteHis given name is Gerald.
ReplyDeleteBack before the strike it seemed like Bob Davidson always had the "blown" call against the Giants (by the way... Giants fan here). I know its ridiculous but its funny that it seemed like that to me.
ReplyDeleteAlso as a Giants fan... the call was 100% correct and was a great call by DiMuro. So there...
To help with the umpires vs. teams argument, I've added a tab to my analysis named "Umpire & Team Relationships".
ReplyDeletehttp://vizwiz.blogspot.com/2012/04/let-your-umpire-ejection-fantasy-league.html
If you want to know which umpire has had the most ejections for your team, hover on your team name and then click on the little bars that appear. Click once to sort descending, a second time to sort ascending and a third time to clear the sort.
Since 2008, for the Giants, Gary Darling has had the most ejections with the Giants (4) and Mike Muchlinksi has had the most ejections with the Giants as HP umpire (3).
It is worth noting that two of Muchlinkski's Giants ejections would have been from the Shane Victorino mound-charging incident in a Phillies-Giants game last year. Not really indicative of any underlying dislike for the team on his part.
ReplyDeleteFor the record, "TheGunsofHochuli" may be the greatest name...ever.
ReplyDeleteOk, we all know DiMuro was right. Was there any doubt or did everyone have to see the 2nd angle.
ReplyDeleteSo why isn't everyone talking about the horse manure playing in a game with 8 errors. The umpires get 9 missed calls before they are behind in this game. Seems like some players need reaming before even questioning an umpire. They should be embarrassed to even come out of the dugout to question a call in a game with 8 errors.
If they cannot play better that 8 errors, go home.
Props to mike dimuro for being able to wear a hat with a bucket and be able to get the bucket off without jacking up his hat. The only other umpire i've seen accomplish this feat is Ed Hickox. I've tried it, it is way difficult to do. I just stick to the bucket with no hat.
