Pre-Season Ejection 001: Tim Timmons (1)
1B Umpire Tim Timmons* ejected Marlins Manager Ozzie Guillen for arguing a foul ball call made by HP Umpire Fieldin Culbreth** in the top of the 6th inning of the Marlins-Red Sox game. With one out and two on, Marlins batter Terry Tiffee hit a 0-0 fastball from Red Sox pitcher Andrew Bailey up the first base line. When fielded by first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, the ball was ruled foul. Replays indicate the ball was first touched by Gonzalez in foul territory, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Red Sox were leading, 3-2. The Red Sox ultimately won the contest, 5-3.
This is Tim Timmons (95)'s first pre-season ejection of 2012.
No points are awarded for ejections during the Spring Training period (Phase i), as per Rules 2 and 4.
*Though Tim Timmons is listed as the 2B Umpire in the box score, he is deemed the 1B Umpire for the purpose of this ejection, as he was working the 1B position at the time of the ejection.
**Though Timmons ruled the ball foul, the foul line between home plate and the front edge of first base is the HP Umpire's responsibility. Accordingly Culbreth had primary jurisdiction on the play and is therefore the calling umpire.
This is the 1st Spring Training ejection of 2012.
This is the 1st Manager ejection of the 2012 pre-season.

Having watched this play that resulted in the EJ (which unfortunately is not shown here) there was a dribbler up the 1st base line about 60-70 feet with a runner on 3rd and less then two outs it is customary for the 1st base umpire to make this call.. Timmons may have been blocked out by Gonzalez on this play... Cubby was 1st base line extended (which is in foul territory for our non-umpires). It is reasonable to think a signal may have been discreetly given by cubby to Timmons and hence the call came very very very late which is why Ozzie was unhappy. Crew communication is key.... delayed calls can result in a situation which is what we have here. Obviosly our HP umpire can not be up the line or around home plate as he'd get hit or have to duck if there is a following play at the plate. Good positioning.... great call and communication in what amounts to a tough play for a couple of really good umpires.... And welcome back everyone!!!! Happy new YEAR!
Good to see we started this year right - with an Ozzie Guillen ejection! They got the call right Ozzie, leave it alone!
I love Bobby V. waving goodbye. It's going to be fun having him back in the league.
so does this automatically change the prop question on when ozzie will get tossed?
Mitch Williams had a good point on MLB network. Right after the supposed waive by Bobby, he gave infield signals, for positioning. It's more likely Bobby was signaling the outfield or infield, to get their attention. As Mitch pointed out the supposed waive and the following infield signals, looked like they were all part of the same motion.
It's a good story, but most likely it's a misunderstanding of infield signals.
I hope MLB does a better job of actually showing the ejection the rest of the year.
@js1metsfan, I think this means we'll have to qualify the prop with "first regular season ejection."
@ anon 8:32... ESPN probably didn't have as many cameras as they would for say a sunday night game or any regular season game.... They didn't actually pick up the mechanic. and they didn't have a camera that was 1st base line extended. MLB.com has proved that they will show not only ejections but also controversal plays.... To further that point... They can only show what the TV broadcast has shown as they can't compile footage that doesn't exist.
I agree with tmac's first post. The firstbase bag is used as a guideline, as to whose responsibility it is to call fair/ foul. Nothing is written in stone. Great job of analyzing this play and subsequent ejection
Well, just goes to show you that Ozzie will always be Ozzie, and like Manny, he'll continue getting in trouble for making poor decisions.
Does anyone have the ncaa referee assignments ? If so please post a link
Colorado State Vs. Murray State:
Sean Corbin, Michael Stephens, Earl Walton
Southern Miss Vs. Kansas State:
Karl Hess, Terry Wymer, Gene Steratore
Let's see what happens in June 11-13. Then we can see how Ozzie took the wave. Valentine said he waved goodbye to get his attention and to say "goodbye, see you in Miami", when Boston plays Miami in Miami for inter-league play. Ozzie said if he had seen it he would have uttered a profanity at Valentine.
Oh well, keep that match-up in June on your calendar. Will it be, I went to a fight and a baseball game broke out or what? Stay tuned. Have the crews ready for some possible posturing or it may just be a bunch of hype.
