A solid umpire like Laz Diaz is overlooked, but this is a winning group. Not even one "questionable" umpire in this group.
ReplyDeleteOnly crew to have all 4 umpires serving in the playoffs is the Kellogg crew. Shows that they are indeed well respected as they should be--best crew in MLB this year. Hope they stick together next year!
ReplyDeleteMaybe we'll see Jim Wolf in the World Series next year, having received his first CS assignment this season.
ReplyDeleteSome suprises not there:
ReplyDeleteMissing the Playoffs were:
Derryl Cousins, Tim McClelland, Dana DeMuth, Brian Runge, John Hirschbeck, Laz Diaz, CB Bucknor, Wally Bell, Doug Eddings, Paul Nauert*, Lance Barksdale, Scott Barry, Dan Bellino, Todd Tichenor, Brian Knight, Jim Reynolds, Mike DiMuro, Andy Fletcher, Paul Schreiber, Paul Emmel, Rob Drake, Marty Foster, Tim Tschida*, Mark Wegner*, Jim Joyce*, Adrian Johnson, Bob Davidson, Hunter Wendelstedt, Phil Cuzzi, Brian O' Nora**, Ed Hickox.
*Did not qualify for Postseason due to time missed during regular season(assumed)
**Currently injured, not able to work in Postseason (assumed)
CB Bucknor should have been chosen.
ReplyDelete@350, that's as long as the Brewers don't play well. Or wherever his brother goes.
ReplyDeleteSimilar idea with the Welke's I believe. That they can't call the same postseason series, though I have no idea why.
Cardinals and Brewers is a surprise matchup, Tigers and Rangers more expected. Should be a fun championship series on both the American League and National League sides. Looking forward to a possible game six on the ALCS side, Tom Hallion taking home plate and all.
Also looking forward to the World Series. They have a good group to choose from.
ReplyDeleteThey picked two very impressive crews. I especially like the ALCS crew. Doesn't get much better than Tim Welke and Tom Hallion as your crew chiefs. I hope the series goes at least six games, so we get to see the entertaining show that is Hallion behind the plate, lol.
ReplyDeleteA lot of great umpires got left out, as well. But not everyone can umpire every postseason. I have heard rumors that Derryl Cousins might be retiring, so if that's the case, then it's a shame that he didn't get one last postseason. But again, that's just a rumor at this point.
A lot ? going into this offseason. Derryl Cousins for one. Is Bill Hohn retiring or is he going to try to rehab and come back again? Injuries are awful. And who are the AAA guys going to get hired?
ReplyDeleteFor the World Series umpires poll, the six that I chose were:
ReplyDeleteGerry Davis (cc), Brian Gorman, Gary Cederstrom, Greg Gibson, Ron Kulpa, Alfonso Marquez
I was tempted to pick Jeff Kellogg, but then I remembered that he worked the World Series last year. I don't know what the rule is, but I don't think guys should get to work the WS on back to back years.
Cederstrom, Gibson, Kulpa, and Marquez all had very good DS games behind the plate. So they deserve it based on that, in my opinion.
Gorman is consistently one of the best, and you hardly ever hear his name, which to me is the mark of a good umpire.
And I picked Davis as the CC, because of his big game experience. And also, as far as the other CC's, because I'm not a big Joe West fan, nor a Jerry Layne fan, and Dale Scott had statistically the worst game behind the plate in the first round. So it was kind of Davis my process of elimination.
Which is also the reason why, even though I like him, and consider him normally one of the best, I couldn't pick Ted Barrett. Not a good game in Game 5 of the Tigers/Yankees series.
I tried to pick based on the quality of work this postseason, not based on reputation.
My hunch is Derryl Cousins along with Tim McClelland and Jim Joyce will retire at the end of the year while Angel Campos, Mike Muchlinski and either Mike Estabrook or DJ Reyburn are added to the staff full time.
ReplyDeleteIt is kind of a shame that those three might retire without working a playoff series, but in all honesty there really don't deserve it. For the second straight season Joyce missed signifcant time and when he was healthy, you could just see the passion wasn't there. McClelland and Cousins were healthy most of the year, but both had horrendous seasons. Both guys miss almost every call on the bases and there was even a game where McClelland brought in an 82% balls-strikes accuracy. That is just not acceptable for an MLB umpire. MCclelland is one of the best umpires the MLB has ever seen, I fully expect him to be in the hall of fame one day. But his time has come and I think he might realize it to. He just looks slowerand more unsure of himself out there.
As far as new CC's call me crazy but I think Angel Hernandez will become a CC. Look at his playoff record over the last 12 years or so. He consistently recieves playoff assignments and whenever he is the acting CC, he always sticks up for his crewmmates. I think the other new CC would be either Wally Bell or Jeff Nelson. While Bell has more tenure, I think Nelson would be the CC because he has a much better playoff record and I think you can count on him to be around for at least 17 more seasons. He looks a lot younger than a 14 year veteran.
What do you all think?
Joyce and Cousins will not retire. McClelland will not retire.
ReplyDelete@11:12pm- I'm glad your honest (you said in all honesty). Let me be honest, you can stick this in your ear:
ALL the guys in the bigs should get a chance at the playoffs. From top to bottom they are separated by such small percentages, there's no way to say who is better when you use a snap shot like 162 games.
Good umpires make bad calls (gasp). I like the guys in the bigs that I happened to know, that's my bias. MLB's selection process is head scratching.
I do not know Brian O'nora. When I see Brian work the plate, I always watch. O'nora is plain and simple a machine. You replace O'nora with a rock and you wouldn't know the difference.
I like the old rotation system. This bullshit of picking the "best" guys at the end of the season is a joke. That's what happens in amateur baseball. If your good enough to work in the bigs, your good enough to work the playoffs. Only in the amateur levels do you just use "body's" in the regular season, and your supposedly best umpires for the playoffs.
(rant)
*Angel buy some plate pants that fit, slim-fit went out in the 80's.
*Cederstrom, why are you moving to make a call on a pick off play at 1st? Why do you set up and then take a step while the play is happening?
*Does anybody iron their pants during the playoffs? I've seen zero sharp creases.
*Do they have mirrors in the umpires dressing rooms? If they do why can't these guys get their gig lines in order? It reminds me of my grandpa, his belt buckle would be on his hip!
*Is there a rule against flex belts? Some of the guys, with the way their shirts come out farther and farther as the game goes on drives me crazy. They look like they've been at wedding reception all nite long.
*If your over 50, just hand the ball to the catcher. If your younger than 50, hand the ball to the catcher. (when putting a new ball into play)
The one trait that amazes me is watching the playoff plate guys, set up EXACTLY the same head-height wise, and never move, tracking the ball with the eyes only.
I loved Bruce Froemming. In his last 5yrs he flinched more than a cat on a Ferris Wheel. It looked like he was trying to flee the scene of a crime.
The umpires' clubhouse attendant is responsible for washing, ironing, etc. their clothes. If the pants don't look great, it's the clubhouse worker who didn't do his job.
ReplyDeleteAnd from what I hear, they usually work at minimum wage, with the umpires tipping them quite well enough for it to come out to a decent paying job.
Isn't is part of officiating philosophy, axiom or other folklore that if you're fat, you wear the belt line higher up so as to conceal part of your gut into the pants?
ReplyDeleteNot to pick on the guy, but I saw Jerry Layne in a golf polo and shorts - normal clothes, and compared to how he wears his ump unifom, there really is a noticeable difference in what protrudes around the midsection. As an ump, it looks like a big waistline, when in fact it really isn't as big as it would appear.
I guess that didn't hurt Jerry from getting the WS. Great crew this year!
