Will there be a Discussions post where we can post who we predict will be assigned to the playoffs? I know in the past MLB has released the umps 2 days before the first game, which would be the 28th, the last day of the season. I would be interested to see what others think, and already have my list ready. It is very hard to take a list of 68 professional umps and bring it down to 36 for the playoffs. (12 CS umps and 24 DS umps.)So who do you have in the postseason? Or who would you want to see? Let the list making begin!
Thanks!

Discussions: Playoff Umps
It's that time of year for an umpire and for us: time to start thinking about the postseason. Anonymous writes:
Here is a guess of the Crew Chiefs we will see (crew chief is first of pair):
ReplyDeleteDS: Demuth and Gorman, Scott and Hallion, Hirschbeck and Rapuano, West and Winters
CS: Davis and Kellogg, McClleland and Cederstrom

Guys, you have to remember Mark Wegner and Tim Tschida are NOT eligible to work the playoffs. Tscida was out from June 16th through through August 26th while Mark Wegner was out from May 28 through August 19. There is a certain amount of games you have to work and neither even came close to that.
ReplyDeleteIf that is really the case with Tschida and Wegner Then I will switch Tschida out of the CC for the DS and put Cederstrom in, and add Ed Rapuano in the WS while adding another umpire to my DS list: Eric Cooper.

It is not as hard as you think. Take out the first year full timers, those out for the year and those who didn't work enough games and pretty much every full time umpire will make the postseason.
ReplyDeleteNot only will keep Tschida and Wegner on my list (they'll be there watch), I will predict an eighth umpire will be added to the WS crew. And my 8th guy is Brian O'Nora. Tschida and Weganer are tied according my sats, neither has missed a pitch all year. According to all estimations, O'Nora's last missed pitch was in AA ball. I like my chances.
ReplyDeleteHold on a second...they only have 6 umps in the WS, no way that's going to become 8
ReplyDelete@Big Marc and everyone else, I agree that Tschida and Wegner are good umpires, but they are INELIGIBLE to work the playoffs because they both missed well over the amount of time allowed. It's a shame, but it is just the rules. Paul Nauert, Lance Barksdale and Jim Joyce are also ineligible and John Hirshbeck might be ineligible, but I don't think so.
ReplyDelete@spballsandstrikes, Andy Fletcher cannot work and LCS because he has never even worked a DS and you have to work a DS before and LCS. I do hope he works a DS, He is not a great umpire but he's not terrible either and deserves to work the playoffs.
