HP Umpire Tim Timmons ejected Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano for throwing at Braves batter Chipper Jones call in the bottom of the 5th inning of the Cubs-Braves game. With one out and none on, Jones took a 1-1 cutter inside for a ball. Zambrano surrendered back to back home runs to the two batters previous to Jones (Freeman and Uggla). Replays indicate the pitch was directed inside at the body of Jones, the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Braves were leading, 8-1. The Braves ultimately won the contest, 10-4.

ReplyDeleteGreat job by Timmons!!!

ReplyDeleteVideo is up.
Timmons really took control of that one, regular one man army out there.
Sportswriters on twitter are reporting that Zambrano left the stadium, with a note on his locker announcing his retirement.
First off, the vid's up: http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=17943115
ReplyDeleteSecondly, I don't think Zambrano's intentions could really be doubted, but even if they could, great job all around (in particular by Tim Timmons) in preventing yet another MLB brawl scene from occurring. Absolutely outstanding - firm, but fair.
Really Z? Not unexpected... not at all...
ReplyDeleteTim Timmons handled this situation better than any umpire I have seen in thirty years when it came to the Atlanta dugout letting them know in no uncertain terms not to get any further out onto the field.
ReplyDeleteGet Zambrano out of baseball. Even Cubs fans don't want him around...
ReplyDeleteCan we start a discussion on the "quick pitch" seen here? http://mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=17958639
ReplyDeleteZambrano is piece of garbage. He just got shellacked by the Braves, and ejected from the game, and he's in the dugout smiling. What a loser.
ReplyDeleteHe'd be doing Major League Baseball, and the Cubs a favor if he was serious about retiring. But he's got about $18 million reasons why he won't, and why the Cubs won't just release him, even though they should.
For Zambrano, come far inside once, whatever. Do it the second time, that's just asking to be thrown out of the game. That's actually one thing I think the MLB video people could have done a better job of: show Zambrano's first pitch that almost hits Jones, and you'll see where Timmons is coming from if you have any question about the ejection.
ReplyDeleteGood job by Timmons in recognizing the situation - and fast, preventing a bench clearing incident, Jeff Kellogg for corralling the Braves and putting them back towards their bench, Carlson & Cooper for keeping the Cubs off the field. Good job by a good crew with a good crew chief.
Can we give Timmons credit for his other ejection in the game?

Great job by Timmons here, for a guy that had 7 ejections last year, he's been great this year and had only one other ejection. This crew handled both the Red Sox-Yankees series and Indians-Tigers series (east and central division battles) without any controversy, which in my mind is a pretty good feat. Cooper is a great umpire, as is Carlson, and Jeff Kellogg, in my opinion, was the guy of the 4 CC's appointed after the retiring a couple of years back that most deserved it. He had filled in for Rick Reed admirably in the past year. Then, he brought the crew together on the mound after the incident, and made sure everybody was on the same page. A job well done by this crew, which has gone quietly unnoticed for most of the season, because they're good.
ReplyDeleteGreat job by the whole crew and Timmons in particular. There was no doubt about Z's intentions. This was an absolutely stellar example of game management. Dump the pitcher and then make sure the bench knows you've dealt with it and they do not need to come any further. Hell of a job Tim!!
ReplyDeleteTimmons is a guy who has been making small deposits in the account of hard work, respect, and integrity for 11 years.
ReplyDeleteLast night, he made a withdrawl from that accont that stopped 30 or so pissed off men in their tracks.
I think Tim just got on the WS crew list with this one.
On a side note, Timmons had another ejection before the game, playfully ejecting Bobby Cox after he Braves retired #6 Friday night.
ReplyDeleteUnofficial Ejections: Tim Timmons (1)
ReplyDeleteHP Umpire Tim Timmons ejected Bobby Cox pregame for arguing unknown.

Does Tim Timmons get any points for throwing Bobby Cox out of the game after Cox threw out the first pitch?

Just let me add one more thing...
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of manager is Quade? He's been pretty much a joke most of the season, but he's the one who left Zambrano out there, twsiting in the wind, while he gave up 5 HR's and 8 ER in five innings...he just didn't have anything in the tank, and was pitching BP to the Braves.
Yeah, Zambrano's a punk, but Quade should have hooked him before it ever got this far. Quade is NOT a big league manager.
