Ejections: Joe West (6)

3B Umpire Joe West ejected Nationals Manager Davey Johnson for arguing a hit by pitch no call in top of the 7th inning of the Nationals-Reds game. With two out and none on, Nationals batter Michael Morse took a 2-0 fastball inside for a called ball three from Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto ruled by HP Umpire Sam Holbrook. Replays indicate the ball made contact with Morse's hand, the call was incorrect.* At the time of the ejection, the Reds were leading, 3-2. The Reds ultimately won the contest, 5-4, in 14 innings on a walk-off home run.

  1. wow, west really screwed the pooch on this one. How are you going to know what was said from the other side of the field, either get in there and break it up, or let your man handle himself

  2. I would like to use a word that starts with an F and ends with uck. That word of course would be FIRETRUCK. Once the manager has gotten his explanation from the umpire that made the call, he cannot "shop" around for other opinions. Too bad baby, nothing can be done. It's in the rule book.

Can you imagine the delay if the manager was allowed to talk to each of the 4 umpires about any call?

Are there any sane people in this world anymore?

If Davey wanted to talk to Joe, he could have walked down without gesturing, and asked a question. Joe would be forced to listen, but pointing at your ear from 100ft away, that's bush league.

  3. Wait, so Joe, sitting at third, ejected Davey while he was arguing with Holbrook? Hahahahahaha.

  4. Clearly, Joe is aware of the UEFL and is trying to pad his stats at the expense of his partners. This is the worst clip I've seen this season. Time to retire, Cowboy!

    Thanks

  6. @anonymous 812pm, you can argue a HBP and ask umpires to confer. It is not a judgement call. And how can west know what is being said, Holbrook might be explaining that he thought he didn't see anything but after looking for at the batters hand he decides to ask for help, We don't know(and neither did west) West's ejection was very quick, especially for being nowhere near the discussion.

  7. Joe's just way to lazy to move his fat a** down to the plate to break this up

  8. The MLB people must really not like Joe West. Here are the flaws with their video:
They never show Holbrook calling in the crew, and they just flash from Johnson/Holbrook to shot of Johnson (much later in the actual sequence of events). They make it look like West yelled down to HP from 3B and ran Johnson. Actually, at the time he ran him, he was just as close as Holbrook, the umps had just broken up their meeting. So, West was right on the ejection, although MLB.com and the Nats announcers would lead you to believe otherwise.

The other thing: I can't find that the ball hit Morse's hand in either the MLB.com video or the MLB.TV feeds. I would challenge that based off the replays shown (including X-MO on FSOhio) the call was correct.

  12. This ruling has been challenged.

After review, the Quality of Correctness has been confirmed. The call is now incorrect.

After review, including examination of the real-time play, replays, and alternate angles, the decision of confirming the original Quality of Correctness was made. Replays indicate the pitch contacted the batter prior to entering the catcher's glove. Specifically, "X-Mo" replay from the 1st base dugout conclusively shows the trajectory of the ball change course after passing the batter, suggesting contact was made with the batter's hand (point of contact was not with any part of the bat). Rule 9.04(a) indicates the umpire-in-chief maintains primary responsibility for calls concerning the batter; West remains the secondary (non-calling) umpire.

    Denied.

In regards to screenshots, that enters into the realm of copyright issues, especially when we would need to show more than one screenshot. At this time, we aren't especially inclined to test those waters. We can cite the source used as we have been doing, but since such broadcast is proprietary, we don't especially want to risk infringement.

  13. I will add on to what Gil said. I have used screenshots a couple of times, but usually a single screenshot. Even then, I probably was pushing the bounds of infringement. Major League Baseball (and their broadcasters) tend to take their copyright very serious. Hence why any video of MLB broadcasts on YouTube don't last more than a day, if a few hours. That is why we link to the videos on MLB.com. Unfortunately, most still photography of games is nowhere near as good as being able to pause a single frame on the live broadcasts, but there is a danger of copyright violations, which we must respect.
