3B Umpire Jerry Layne ejected Mets Manager Terry Collins for arguing an out call in the bottom of the 7th inning of the Yankees-Mets game. With none out and one on, Mets batter Justin Turner hit a fly ball to Yankees center fielder Curtis Granderson. Mets R1 Jose Reyes tagged from first base to second, and continued to third and was ruled out on a throw from Yankees shortstop Eduardo Nunez to third basemen Alex Rodriguez. Replays indicate that Rodriguez missed tagging Reyes on the swipe tag attempt, the call was incorrect. At the time of the ejection, the Yankees were leading, 3-1. The Yankees ultimately won the contest, 5-1.
This is Jerry Layne (24)'s third ejection of 2011.

Wrap: Yankees at Mets 7/1/11
Video (1): Collins is Ejected by Layne
Video (2): NYY @ NYM 7/1/11 Recap 1:37-1:38 Mark
I was watching the game live, I've watched the replay several times, and I still can't tell if A-Rod tagged Reyes or not. So I'm not gonna get on Jerry Layne for this one. I would call it inconclusive.
ReplyDeleteReyes was stupid for going to 3rd in the first place, with the team down 3-1, and needing base runners.
I'm one of the few that posts here that is apparently not an umpire, so can someone explain to me the mechanics of how the umpires rotate on a play like that?
Basically, I wanna know why that was Layne's call. Why does the 3B umpire Ted Barrett go into the outfield on a fly ball to center? Shouldn't the 2nd base umpire Bob Davidson be the one to go into the outfield, since he's the closest to the play?
And since Layne apparently had third on that play, did he do a poor job by not being down there, and in position to make a call, rather than running down the line as the play is happening?
They showed a different angle replay in the recap highlights of the game, and at the 1:37 to 1:38 mark of the video, it looks to me like A-Rod missed the tag.

Thanks Dan, I'll take a look at this. Still reviewing.
ReplyDeleteDan....when the 2nd base umpire is on the inside, the "wingmen" have catch/no catch. When the 3rd base umpire goes out you have a rotation by the plate man at third. I didn't see the play but Layne may have been tardy getting there because of Reyes going 1st to 3rd on a tag up. Normally that would be a rotation you would read on. Recently met Jerry Layne at umpire school.....great guy.
ReplyDeletenice catch Dan, your right.
ReplyDeleteAs is often the case, when players don't make plays...like catching the ball...like everyone including the umpires expect, problems occur. This was not a normal rotation play....if Jerry Layne and Jose Reyes raced 100x....Reyes wins everytime. I went back and watched the video and it's tough to tell....3rd base coach had a great look.
ReplyDelete@ Dan
ReplyDeleteIn this situation the wing umpires (1st/3rd) will go out whenever a fly ball is hit to the outfield because the second base umpire is inside. Meaning he is on the infield grass. Because the center fielder turned toward the 3rd base umpire that signifies it will be his catch/no catch and this is why 3rd base umpire Ted Barrett goes out. In this situation the 2nd base umpire (Bob Davidson) has the call at 2nd while the 1st base umpire (Brian Knight) has the legal tag up at 1st. The plate umpire should be moving toward 3rd when the runner from 1st goes to second. If there was a play at the plate on this play it would be the 1st base umpires' call.
Unfortunately the crew from hell strikes again on this one. Big Jerry Layne was moving at the time of the tag and not in position for the call.. He didn't take a good angle and hence the reason you think.. and i have to agree with you the call was missed
The yankee cast actually has the better angle which clearly shows the call was missed. The MLB.com cast isn't as conclusive.
The question has to be asked: Would a guy in better shape be in position to make a better call?

ReplyDeletePossibly, but the as a previous poster said, it doesn't look like Layne either started to move up the line as he should have when the runner made it to 2nd, or got caught flat footed, so-to-speak, and just wasn't going to win the race.
I'm not convinced he's ever go to gain enough position to actually see this swipe from that angle anyway. He would have to have fully rotated and come off the line either way to get an angle on that play, and that would have required a last minute correction from a standing position, most likely, to see it.
There's no question that better athleticism will help with general mechanics, but I don't think he makes this call anyway, unless he's fully rotated and waiting, which would have required some phenomenal timing.
Admittedly, at 6'3" and in the high 200's, I'm a bit biased. ;) But I don't even think a younger, faster and more in-shape umpire gets this call 100% of the time either.

ReplyDeleteI'm not sure Jerry's Big stature impacted the call. A skinny guy like a barksdale could have easily made the same mistake.
I'm hardly an MLB umpire, but I do umpire and I am in shape and making the call on the run when the head is moving is the wrong thing to do. Sometimes umpires fall asleep or get caught up and Jerry did a great job getting down the line and probably would have been in a better position had he initially gone down the line.
The mets broadcast does make it look inconclusive but last night sportscenter had other camera views and Jerry missed it.
Layne is a good umpire, but this is a classic case of making a call on the run.
With a runner on first base and a catch in the outfield there is usually not a rotation..the only time they rotate is when there is a clean base hit to the outfield (or a dropped catch). As this play is concerned, there was a catch in the outfield and Reyes tagging up at first. With U3 out, U2 has Reyes into second and third base...maybe this crew has a different rotation? or maybe since Reyes took off U2 wasn't going to make it and Layne was walking up the line, just in case.
ReplyDeleteSecond time this week Jerry's lazy mechanics have reared their ugly head. Missed fair/foul in the 3-man game on Sunday, then this call.

ReplyDeleteYES!!
Not his rotation, however, second base umpire didn't move across like he should of.
ReplyDeleteSad to say, when I hear that this crew is doing a game, I expect something like this to happen. Not sure whose fault this is, but in general a large umpire lumbering up the 3rd base line to make a call while on the move just doesn't look good nor confident.
ReplyDeleteThis is why you need six man crews in the regular season. Three umpires for four bases is always going to cause trouble.
ReplyDeleteIt looks to me like the reply shows that the tag was made. I must be seeing something that you all aren't
