Ejections: Angel Campos (4)

HP Umpire Angel Campos ejected Angels designated hitter Bobby Abreu for arguing a strike call in the bottom of the 1st inning of the Tigers-Angels game. With two out and none on, Abreu took a 3-2 changeup from Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander for a called strike three. Replays indicate the strike one 0-0 pitch was located thigh high, but off the outside corner of the plate, the call was incorrect.* At the time of the ejection, the contest was tied, 0-0. The Angels ultimately won the contest, 1-0.

This is Angel Campos (84)'s fourth ejection of 2011.
Angel Campos now has -8 points in the Umpire Ejection Fantasy League (-6 Previous + 3 AAA + -1 Penalty + -4 Incorrect Call = -8).
Angel Campos was undrafted in 2011.
*This call is incorrect under 'Kulpa Rule', pitch #1 had a px value of -1.006, which is in the 'ball' range.

This is the 107th ejection of 2011.
This is the 48th player ejection of 2011.
Prior to his ejection, Abreu was 0-1 in the contest.

Which umpire is the league leader in ejections right now?

Your present leader is Rob Drake (30) with 6 ejections. Bob Davidson (6) and Joe West (22) each have 5, and six umpires are tied with 4 ejections.

Nice to hear announcers not be homers when it comes to one of their player's being ejected. The pitch looked low and on their Fox Trak it was low, but they put the blame on Abreu for arguing too long with Campos. Quite a refreshing change from the total homers like the Hawk.

I still haven't gotten over the loss of Physioc & Hudler from the Angels booth, and I still think the Angels broadcasts were more exciting and enjoyable back then, but try as I might, there just isn't all that much to complain about in regards to Gubi & Rojas.

Reading Abreu's lips, looks like he was contesting that the last pitch was "down."

Anonymous,

It is a rule we established to determine quality of correctness (QOC) on a strike call in relation to the horizontal plane of the strike zone. We used pitch f/x as our primary source to determine QOC. We use the raw data on the tables Brooksbaseball provides from pitch f/x to make this determination.

Gil's write up on this can be read here:

These are the px values that we use to determine QOC in relation to the horizontal plane of the strike zone:
Abs 0.000-0.900 = Strike
Abs 0.901-1.000 = Borderline
Abs 1.000+ = Ball

Gil's write up at that link provides much more in depth information on this.
