Ejections: Tim Tschida (2)

3B Umpire Tim Tschida ejected A's Manager Bob Melvin for Unsportsmanlike-NEC in the top of the 3rd inning of the Royals-A's game. It is unclear which particular play Melvin was arguing when ejected; Quality of Correctness only applies to calls made directly prior to ejection, the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the A's were leading, 4-0. The A's ultimately won the contest, 8-4.

This is Tim Tschida (4)'s second ejection of 2011.
Tim Tschida now has 2 points in the Umpire Ejection Fantasy League (-2 Previous + 2 MLB + 2 Correct Call = 2).
Tim Tschida is owned as a Secondary Umpire by jhagen88, who is now tied for 29th place in the UEFL with 2 points.
*This call is correct under UEFL Rules 6.b.ii.e and 6.e.iii.

This is the 77th ejection of 2011.
This is the 41st Manager ejection of 2011.
This is Bob Melvin's first ejection of 2011 and first ejection as A's Manager.

  1. I know this doesn't apply here, but the balk-off to end Mets-Braves on 6/16 deserves a mention and perhaps people can talk about their balk stories (in addition to talking about their ejection stories).

  2. Penwhale,

Thanks for the comment. Note our recent addition to the UEFL website. One of our new tabs: "Umpire Forum" is now a page for Discussion Requests. We'll keep this in mind though, thank you.

  3. This was absolutly bizzarre. Maybe Melvin was confused... He's not used to see his team winning. He came out of the dugout 3 times (in three innings)... Bill Welke nails a call @ second on a steal by Melky...and I guess Tschida had heard enough and ran him. B/c the game was only on MLB.TV the video of the ejection doesn't exist. BUT the call prior was correct and the ejection immediatly followed.

  4. "I probably went a little too far," Melvin said. "Timmy thought I was arguing with him, and he wasn't even involved with it and he ended up throwing me out, so that's where a little bit of the miscommunication was. "I was trying to support my players because it looked like Weeks thought [Cabrera] was out at second base on that play and was a little frustrated," Melvin said. "I probably went too far. I didn't want to go out to the field every inning. That would have been my third time out there. It's probably not a good example to set, so I learned my lesson."

  5. Part of the problem is the A's feel like the umps have been against them lately. In a clip I saw yesterday, the commentators talked about how the umps had supposedly screwed them three straight games. In that game, the alleged culprit was Mike Estabrook on a call at third. I haven't been able to find any footage showing me anything though.

It's just nice to see the A's on the move, they seem to be responding to Melvin.
