Ejections: Jerry Layne (1)

3B Umpire Jerry Layne ejected Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle for arguing an out (catch) call in the bottom of the 7th inning of the Mets-Pirates game. With none out and none on, Pirates batter Lyle Overbay flied out to Mets center fielder Angel Pagan on a 3-1 pitch. Replays indicate that the ball did not hit the wall, but rather the ball entered the glove of Pagan as Pagan's glove was against the wall, the call was correct. Hurdle was simultaneously ejected by Layne and HP Umpire Bob Davidson; Layne is credited with the ejection as Crew Chief and per the official box score. At the time of the ejection, the Mets were leading, 1-0. The Mets ultimately won the contest, 7-0.

    Looks like a good call. I had to chuckle a bit at both Jerry Layne and Bob Davidson simultaniously ejecting Clint Hurdle.

    The vid is up...wait till you see this one...Hurdle is ejected by both Lane and Davidson simultaneously...may be the most effin' hilarious thing thus far this season.

    Looked like the right call. Hilarious clip of Hurdle getting tossed simultaneously. I vaguely remember back in the late 80s ('89 maybe) that Cookie Rojas got tossed by 3 out of the 4 umps at the same time (makes you wonder why the 4th didn't eject LOL).

    Also, Davidson tossed Matt Diaz in the 9th, presumably for arguing balls and strikes from the dugout.

    Amazing synchronized ejection by Layne and Davidson at the same time! I believe this should be classified as correct call (crewmate), as Knight had a the ball on the play.

    The video is up now... he was arguing the catch by Pagan, because it was right at the wall and Hurdle was arguing that it hit the wall before entering Pagan's glove. The funny thing is that both Bob Davidson and Jerry Layne ejected Hurdle at the same time. Davidson also ejected Matt Diaz in the bottom of the 9th for arguing balls & strikes, but that one doesn't appear in the box score for some reason.

    Laynes hook was much better than Bob's..

    Layne always gets stuck with weird ejections. Remember a couple of years ago when Chris Tiller started to eject a manager,stopped,then Layne told him to go ahead and do it?

    Shouldn't Davidson's ejection of Diaz be noted on here? I know by rule it won't count for scoring, but it would throw off the historical data page if it is not acknowledged.

    @SPballsandstrikes- ya, that was a game in Toronto where Layne was the acting CC and it was one of Tiller's first series...Layne usually stays pretty calm and so Hurdle definitely must have said the magic words to get Bobby and Jerry to respond at the same second.

    Umpires cannot win. When they turn and walk away like MLB wants now, they still get the comments about they are more arrogant, and confrontational than the old days. Or they get the old, you can't talk to them anymore. No you cannot talk if MLB wants you to walk away.

    When they stand up and argue like the old days, which many managers like them to do, they of course get the arrogant and confrontational tag. Either way the umpires are always in a no win situation when it comes to ejections.

    As always, the managers and players want to run roughshod over the umpires and still remain in the game. They want to cuss them, bump them and spit on them and remain in the game and just say that is part of the game and umpires have to take it. That's their definition of non arrogance, and non confrontational. Hasn't changed in a long time as far as the "thinking" goes. However, in general, it looks like managers and players are more civil than years and years ago, but not all the time.

    You may think that Davidson kept arguing. But he clearly walked away and let Hurdle go back to Layne.

    This happens on the play before the ejection...

    Can anyone see Pagan touch second, or is this a "he went by the base so he must have touched it" type of ruling?

    on live TV they showed a better angle, he never touched second when he arrived in that area, but his foot kicked second on the way back

    Because Pagan went past 2B (even by just that little half a step), he is considered having legally touched the base, whether or not he actually did.

    In order to return to 1B, he MUST physically touch 2B before going back to 1B in order to have legally run the bases. As you can see, he clearly didn't.

    Also, yes the simultaneous ejection is amusing, by why is Davidson even there? Either all 4 umpires are talking with the manager (which looks bad) or just one (in this case, Layner) is talking to the umpire. They're going 1 on 1, and BD wanders over and then ejects him before Hurdle has even addressed him? WTF. And then he begins to argue with him? WTF x 2

    I agree with Kirk Gibson. Time to retire, old man.

    @Ump_24,

    I was wondering the same thing; Hurdle started talking to Davidson, but then Layne (as crew chief) took over the discussion, even, at around 1:25 in the video, warning Bob to stay away from the discussion. Layne seemed to have calmed Hurdle down, but then for some unknown reason, Bob had to make his presence known again, and then, 'boom', the double ejection. What could Davidson have been doing that was helpful?
