HP Umpire Bob Davidson ejected Pirates right fielder Matt Diaz for arguing a strike one call in the bottom of the 9th inning of the Mets-Pirates game. With none out and none on, Pirates batter Andrew McCutchen took a 0-0 fastball for a called first strike. Replays indicate the pitch was located navel high and over the inner half of home plate, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Mets were leading, 7-0. The Mets ultimately won the contest, 7-0.

Hahaa Davidson couldn't have his ejection earlier when Layne stole his thunder, so he ejects the guy from the dugout! LOL
ReplyDeleteBob can now join the elite Greg Gibson in ejecting players from the bench who are not on the playing field.

I don't get the criticism of Bob Davidson here. Clearly the correct call, yet people are harping on him. He upholds the rules very well. No umpire should tolerate screaming and yelling from the bench on balls and strikes call. Great ejection by Bob here.
ReplyDeleteAlso, him and Layne heard the same thing from Hurdle, both ejected him. He conducted himself like a Crew Chief would...telling the ejected to go into the clubhouse.
Diaz was probably still pissed about his own strike out in the bottom of the 8th inning. Pitch #1 of his AB was a borderline strike call by Davidson, but it was close enough that it would have been considered a good strike call by the rules of this league.
ReplyDeleteIt was a good ejection by Davidson. Other than his epic confrontation with Kirk Gibson, he's been quiet so far this year. Maybe he's following the Bill Hohn approach. Hohn had a bad 2009, as most people remember, but he rebounded and had a solid and relatively quiet 2010.
Bob probably figures he better be on his best behavior, with the possibility of some more crew chief positions opening up in the near future. Joe West (33 years) and Derryl Cousins (32 years) are getting close to the end of the line.
Greg Gibson once ejected Casey Blake from the dugout in a Blake-Torre two-fer.
ReplyDeleteI don't get the criticism, either. On the Hurdle ejection, he walked away fairly quickly and let the crew chief deal with Hurdle. Personally, I think a third umpire should've slid in after that ejection, but since Bob and Jerry are the two senior umpires on the crew, it probably wasn't going to happen.
ReplyDeleteI'm on board here, but that should be no surprise. I rarely have criticism for Bob Davidson. And hey, anonymous, you should pay more attention. Lots of umpires toss guys from the bench, not just those two. I think you have a hard-on for Gibson, which is a shame because he's an excellent umpire.
ReplyDeleteDoug Eddings tossed Chipper Jones for bench jockeying last year.
ReplyDeleteDoug Eddings also tossed Mike Hampton from the dugout when he had a huge dust-up with Johnny Estrada several years ago. Hampton got suspended because he was on the DL when he got tossed. Chipper was also on the DL but, as far as I know, he wasn't suspended.
ReplyDeleteDavidson rules, like it should be.
