Ejections: Mike Estabrook (1)

HP Umpire Mike Estabrook ejected Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler for arguing a swinging strike three call in the bottom of the 5th inning of the Royals-Rangers game. With two out and none on, Kinsler was ruled to have swung at 0-2 slider from Royals pitcher Danny Duffy for strike three. Replays indicate that Kinsler did not appear to make a swing attempt, but successfully checked his swing, the call was incorrect. QOC was challenged and the call is now correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Royals led, 5-3. The Rangers ultimately won the contest, 7-6, on a walk-off single.

    I am not an Estabrook fan, but THAT is a great effin' call....wish he would have given the Royals catcher a post game EJ.

    Definite challenge. I paused the video and Kinsler absolutely brought the bat too far around. Great call by Estabrook.

    Whoa. On this site in the past, there have been "swings" that most umpires (during appeals) and viewers would call as a no-swing, and they've been listed as "correct" swing calls. This site has always erred to the side of everything being a swing attempt. How is this possible a no-swing?

    Challenge for sure. I can find many examples on the old site of that being a clear swing.

    Considering there is no book definition of what a swing is, but only what tv personalities have led you to believe are pre-requisites for a swing, there is no way to argue that this call is wrong. Did a batter who is bunting attempt at the bunt because the bat was left out over the plate as he dove for cover on a pitch up and in? He stopped attempting at the pitch when he started bailing out. Whether the bat crosses the plate or not is the basis for a check swing only because you've heard it too much and too long on tv.

    Yesterday: Royals game: Ejected Kinsler
    That's all I can remember, there may be more than that. Pretty good.

    After review, the Quality of Correctness has been overturned. The call is now correct.

    After review, including examination of the real-time play, replays, and alternate angles, the decision of overturning the original Quality of Correctness was made. After review, it appeared the batter attempted to strike the ball, and the swinging strike call was proper.

    Overturned.

    Good call, although IMHO it looked evident the first time right at the 37 mark. If he would of hit it, it would have been a home run.

    Here's the criteria for an umpire as I was taught at umpire school. "if in the umpires judgement he feels the batter attempted to swing". There's no mention in the OBR of the bat going a certain distance. Sam Holbrook said the check swing is the hardest call in baseball.
