Ejections: Mark Wegner (1)

HP Umpire Mark Wegner ejected Rockies Manager Jim Tracy for arguing an out call to end the bottom of the 3rd inning of the Diamondbacks-Rockies game. With two out and two on, Rockies batter Troy Tulowitzki took a 0-2 fastball from Diamondbacks pitcher Joe Saunders for a called first ball. Replays indicate the ball squirted away from Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero, who quickly gathered the ball and tossed to Saunders as Rockies R3 Dexter Fowler attempted to advance to home plate. Replays indicate Saunders applied the tag as Fowler failed to touch home plate, the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the contest was tied, 1-1. The Diamondbacks ultimately won the contest, 5-2.

This is Mark Wegner (47)'s first ejection of 2011.
Mark Wegner now has 4 points in the Umpire Ejection Fantasy League (0 Previous + 2 MLB + 2 Correct Call = 4).
Mark Wegner is owned as a Primary Umpire by cyclone14, who is now in 2nd place in the UEFL with 13 points.*

Mark Wegner is owned as a Secondary Umpire by zcr57, who is now tied for 4th place in the UEFL with 11 points.
*cyclone14's Secondary Umpire, Adrian Johnson, also had an ejection today. Johnson's QOC is pending with the default placeholder of "correct." cyclone14's League points may change as a result of Johnson's QOC being reviewed.
*Quality of Correctness was challenged and denied ("Correct" ==> "Correct").

This is the 50th ejection of 2011.

What a play! WHAT A PLAY! Saunders made a terrific play, and Wegner completely owned that call. Great job by the defensive team & the umpire.

Tracy... what're you doing arguing while two players are sprawled out right below you?

wow. great hustle by wegner to get out of the way of the throw but also in the space to see that Fowler did not get to the plate.
great out mechanic.

Now that's a good play all around. Everyone and I mean everyone is hustling. THAT is big league baseball.

Wegner is a superstar plain and simple.

I knew Wegner had arrived when he tossed Lou Piniella in Chicago several years ago. Good job Mark!

Yea... 2 players injured, one of which ended up doing an impromptu somersault and hasn't left his back since the play ended is not the time to come out and argue. I'd say argue after the players are seen to, but by that time anything to be gained in long gone. There was absolutely zero reason to argue this call EVEN if Wegner missed something.

The announcers are clueless, too. Tracy points at the plate, he gets ejected. A no-brainer ejection.

Great call, and Tracy, come on, no respect for an injured player at all.

This is a great play by the pitcher, and a great call by the umpire. The runner looks out from every angle, but Wegner is in the best angle and makes the call.

I love the set of commentators who can't let go that Tulowitski jumped so they think he got hit.

And the guy on the other feed, talking about whether Tracy was trying to show Wegner up by pointing at the dirt. "It's not about you." You mean it wasn't until Tracy made it that way. Tracy shouldbe picking his runner up off the ground.

"Relax, it's not about you" has to be one of the stupidest comments i have ever heard an announcer make about an ejection.

I knew Wegner was a solid umpire, that's why I have him on my team

Looks like Wegner might be done for a while...

This play has been challenged and is under review.

This ruling has been challenged.

After review, the Quality of Correctness has been confirmed. The call is now correct.

Upon initial examination, R3 Fowler appeared to be tagged out.

Upon further examination, including examination of the replay and real-time play, the determination of upholding the original Quality of Correctness was made. Piecing together both replays show that Saunders applied the tag to Fowler's left thigh before Folwer's right foot (the outstretched leg toward home) touched home plate. At the 1:01 mark of the first video (although obstructed by the umpire), a tag has been applied by Saunders, and it appeared Folwer's foot had not yet touched. To confirm this, using the :50 mark of the second video (by looking at where the visible heel of Fowler was on the first video when the tag was applied), it was clear no part of Fowler's foot was touching the plate before Saunders had applied the tag. Fowler was out.

Denied.

I have to echo the sentiment of a few others in here. I heard it here and in so many other replay videos but these announcers are absolute douche bags with some of the ridiculous statements that they make. Sadly,(yetI suppose the primary reason for their ridiculous comments) most of the announcers are former ball players themselves back from a time when players seemed to have more respect for the game itself, including umpires. But the stuff being said is not only blatantly stupid and unfounded, but in most cases completeyl unprofessional and uncecessary as in this case where he shouts "it's not about you!?" Wtf? Why is this tolerated? Why don't the umpires and or union ask MLB to step in and ask these jack a$$es to be a bit more professional, at the very least until they have seen the dsmn replay and know wtf they are talking about. Ugh.....it drives me crazy. Sorry for the rant guys.
