Ejections: Joe West (3)

HP Umpire Joe West ejected Twins Manager Ron Gardenhire for arguing a strike two (foul tip) call in top of the 9th inning of the Twins-Red Sox game. With none out and none on, Twins batter Danny Valencia attempted to check his swing on a 1-1 fastball from Red Sox pitcher Jonathan Papelbon. Replays indicate the ball contacted the bat prior to entering the catcher's mitt, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the contest was tied, 1-1. The Red Sox ultimately won the contest, 2-1, in 11 innings.

This is Joe West (22)'s third ejection of 2011.

  1. Before everyone starts harpin on Cowboy pow pow Joe... HE GOT THIS ONE RIGHT. Give him some credit guys!

  2. West clearly baited Gardenhire into this argument. There was no need to toss. Gardenhire wasn't overly aggressive and was just asking for a simple explanation.

  3. Gardenhire came out of the dugout to argue balls/strikes. It's an auto-eject. There was no baiting here.

  4. Joe wants more camera time now that he's slimmed down. No need for an ejection. Verbal/strong verbal message would suffice here. Just sticking up the hand is a bit antagonistic. Really can't tell if he got the call right or not, but still he didn't act professionally.

  5. It is such a huge event when Joe West has an ejection... LOL! It's better than the Twins-Sox game itself!

  6. I am a lurker and generally would never post anything here, but seriously? Gardenhire knows he can not come out to argue balls and strikes. West apparently (not seen in clip) gave him ample warning to not come out. It is automatic at that point if he continues. Direct some scrutiny on Gardenhire here not West. West is not ever going to get help to reverse a foul tip he has called.

  7. I agree with Anonymous Lurker. There's getting help from your crew on a call, and then there's this. He heard the tick, it's a foul tip. What, so the 1B Umpire has a better view of this play than Joe? Seriously?

  8. New MLB Rule: Joe West may not eject any person from a game unless Hawk Harrelson is in the announcer's booth.

  9. That is not an appealable play to first, nor is the manager allowed to come out and argue that. Yet another example of pure ignorance from the broadcast booth.

  10. Can't be too surprised by the announcer's lack of knowledge, but seriously, this is a good Joe West ejection. I think he does everything he's supposed to do here, and I think I heard that tick, too. Call was right on and routine. Maybe if it wasn't Joe West, Gardy doesn't come out to argue, but then again, that's an AWFULLY big and dangerous assumption. West does a good job umpiring this play, give the man credit. He called it correctly, and I'm glad to see this site calling his call correct (talk about your brain teaser).

  11. Jow West may be the Chuck Norris of umpiring...

We didn't win WWII...Joe West was a tank crew chief serving with a British Thermal Unit, and ejected Hitler from the war.

The missing verse of "Casey at the Bat" in 1888 has Casey ejected by Joe West when he looked back at Joe after striking out (In 1888, Joe was a AAA call up umpire)

Joe West secretly leads Seal Team Six...that would explain the weight loss.

  12. Picked this up on twitter this morning.

    MLBNetwork MLB Network
VIDEO - Larry Bowa on umpire Joe West: "He's out of control." http://atmlb.com/lQnV2U #MLBTonight

    And this posted yesterday afternoon.

Sox fans would be happy to know Joe West walked into Abe & Louie's on Friday night and was booed out of the bar. Had to sit in dining room.

There seems to have been a crosshairs on Joe now for a couple of years. I sure hope things cool down for him.

Watch the video from MLB.Com. Much better view of the tip, and better coverage of what Joe says to Gardenhire and how many times he said 'don't come out' before he ran him. This wasn't a quick hook, Joe gave him a chance.

And screw Bowa, Mr. "I got run from a spring game for refusing to wear a helmet in the coaching box". That's a clear foul tip, and it's a shame the league can't fine him for this monologue.

  13. "The missing verse of "Casey at the Bat" in 1888 has Casey ejected by Joe West when he looked back at Joe after striking out (In 1888, Joe was a AAA call up umpire)" -- MADE MY DAY! GREAT!

Bowa's a punk. When he was with the Phillies and the Dodgers, he always managed to do stupid things. Montague tossed Bowa as the first ejection of 2009 for that coaching box issue. You think any ump would have had a coaching box issue with someone like Dino Ebel? Jeff Datz? Not a chance! They behave, they're respectful. Bowa... not at all...

  14. I'm not a Joe West fan, but I agree with the handling of everything here.

It's not unreasonable, especially at the MLB level, to put a hand up when a manager is coming out of the dugout - especially knowing full well he shouldn't be out there. I don't think it's antagonistic, it's preventive umpiring.

It was clear and obvious with West's 'foul tip' mechanic what the call was - there's no point in Gardenhire coming out to do anything or to argue anything. Once he steps out of the dugout, he's fair game. West gave him plenty of warning verbally and otherwise and frankly, as compared to many other ejections (e.g. Ozzie) he was calm and handled it relatively quietly and without the big show that Bowa claims in his clip.

While not a West fan, I still think credit should be given where credit is due. Gardenhire, IMHO, is equally interested in making the game about himself, so it's not incredibly surprising that he went out and got tossed - I think that was his intention in the first place.

  15. I'm not gonna say that West had no right to toss Gardenhire here. What I think is ridiculous is that he wouldn't even give him any sort of explanation. Even if a manager s arguing balls and strikes, the ump usually gives him a little bit of time. Gardenhire was by no means acting out until West started putting up his hand and threatening that he'd toss him if he steps on the dirt.

Look I'm not gonna say I'm an umpiring expert (my experience in the field is some little league games), but it seems ridiculous to toss a manager THAT quickly on something like that. I know Joe's sure as heck not changing his mind, but still. Give an explanation.

  16. I attended umpire school this year and I can tell you that Country Joe got this one right. The rule book clearly states that a manager, coach, or player may not leave their position to argue balls and strikes. I watched the video and I saw a foul tip and the foul tip mechanic. Nothing Gardenhire could say would change that. Once he steps out of the dugout, he's gone, no questions asked.

  17. It's simple, you leave the dugout to argue balls/strikes, you're getting tossed.

  18. I heard Joe West got the lap band during the offseason.

  19. Haha. Joe West aka Joe "Ozzie Guillen, don't you dare step on my dirt, but feel free to kick Geovany Soto's catcher's mask while broadcaster/announcer guy Hawk Harrelson goes on another whiny rant about how biased he thinks I am" West.

    Dad gummit!
