1B Umpire Joe West ejected Rays Manager Joe Maddon for arguing an out call to end the bottom of the 7th inning of the Blue Jays-Rays game. With two out and two on, Rays batter Sam Fuld hit a 1-2 fastball from Blue Jays pitcher Jason Frasor to Blue Jays third baseman Edwin Encarnacion to first baseman Adam Lind for a double play. Initially ruled safe on a tag play at first base, West entered an umpire consultation, resulting in the reversal of the original call, and Fuld being ruled out. Replays indicate Lind failed to tag Fuld prior to Fuld touching first base, the call was incorrect, and Joe West is the calling umpire under UEFL Rule 6.b.iii.a.1.* At the time of the ejection, the Blue Jays were leading, 3-1. The Blue Jays ultimately won the contest, 3-2.

Make a call and stick with it. There's nothing there to conference about at any level. This is NOT on Fairchild - this is on West.
ReplyDeleteI believe the old saying is, "as goes Joe West, goes the bulk of the Umpire Ejection Fantasy League."
ReplyDeleteI don't know how Joe West can allow himself to be overruled there.
ReplyDeleteThis is without a doubt the worst crew in MLB. You've got West and Angel Hernandez already. Apparently, their incompetence has rubbed off on the other members of the crew.
ReplyDeleteTwo things seriously wrong with this play:
ReplyDelete(1) Nice of Joe West to actually adjust to the bad throw. A couple of quick steps and a lean and he would've been in position to see the tag and that it occurred with the B/R already on the base.
(2) Fairchild was probably asked, "Did he tag him?" and Fairchild could only say yes. Of course, the important thing (that the B/R had hit the base prior to the tag was probably never discussed.
I never, never conference on a play like this and I normally work on a 2-umpire crew and have to bust over from the C position to make this call. I do my best to get in position, read the throw, and adjust I still get a better look than the plate guy (who in this situation can't even bust up the line to get a better look himself).
In a 4-man crew, this lazy umpiring by West is simply inexcusable.
West admitted he screwed up this call: http://sports.nationalpost.com/2011/05/04/we-may-have-erred-umps-say-after-reversing-call-in-jays-game/
ReplyDeleteDoesn't help me now, though...
Let's start at the beginning. It is completely appropriate for West to ask for help. From his angle, he can't see the tag. And if he hadn't asked for help, the room would be choked with people screaming about how arrogant he is to not ask.
ReplyDeleteSecond, the tag did happen. If West based his safe call on a lack of a tag, then again, asking for help is right. Hernandez had a much better angle on the tag.
That said, replay does show Fuld's foot on the bag before the tag, and that kind of timing would be difficult for Hernandez to see. But again, if West doesn't ask for help, he's hung from a tree. More to the point, if he doesn't ask, maybe he tosses whoever replaced Farrell.
Finally, West wasn't 'overruled'. That's an awful misnomer propogated by idiot commentators. The umpire crew discussed the call and changed it. No one umpire has the authority to change another's call without his consent.
Here's West making a call at the plate in the same game:

Line drive into left, so Schreiber went out after the call, Fairchild rotated to third, and West got home in time for the call.
Clearly a mistake, but give credit to Joe for admitting part of what Hernandez said "did not register"
ReplyDeleteSome umpires will never admit they made a mistake, so give Joe some credit(even if it a small amount) for at least acknowledging the mistake.
