Professional Baseball Umpire Vic Carapazza |
After the end of the 2012 regular season, umpires Ed Rapuano and Tim Tschida were amongst those discussed as possible retirements (see Rumor Mill Madden, 10/7/12); other names mentioned solely due to extended absences and/or injury to end the 2012 season were Mike DiMuro, Brian Runge, Hunter Wendelstedt, Bruce Dreckman and John Hirschbeck. Hirschbeck has previously stated he intends to return to MLB in 2013.
Previously, Todd Tichenor was hired in advance of the 2012 season as a replacement for the retiring Bill Hohn. An official "Hired: " post will be created when/if this story is confirmed or announced.

You heard it here 1st!!
Isn't he Richie Garcia's son-in-law?
It's good to be Rich Garcia son-in-law. Poltics as usual.
You can confirm Carapazza, as it was announced at the Wendelstedt Umpire school yesterday. Congrats Vic!
Early returns are Carapazza, Al Porter & Manny Gonzalez.
All three are IL guys. Wonder if this will result in others giving it up. A few can't be real happy.
That doesn't surprise me at all. Gonzalez spent most of the season with Davis's crew filling in for Dreckman and usually when that happens it leads to being hired. I wouldn't be surprised if there are some longtime Triple A Call ups not returining next year such as the Mike's, Angel Campos and DJ Reyburn. Those 4 have been primed for a job for awhile now but continue to get passed over. I don't have any inside information or anything but I doubt we will se all 4 back next year.I think Reyburn was in the best shape of everybody for a job but his attitude severly hurt his chances.
So you think they would quit after 12+ years of work towards this because they didn't get a job this round!?! That's crazy! If MLB didn't like them then they would have released them. Plenty of jobs coming up the next few years, they will have plenty of opportunities to grab those jobs. Good luck to them.
Why are they getting passed over? Estabrook has worked more big league games than any of them.
No, I am saying I wouldn't be surprised if one of them is let go seeing that they continue to be passed over. I know sometimes Umpires have to wait awhile before finally getting a job(Drake,Guccione,Barksdale, etc.) but I think the MLB can only wait so long with some of these guys. I don't wish for anyone to be fired and frankly the process can be unfair I just wouldn't be surprised to see one of them gone
